I don't record, but Pro Tools and Reason have high reviews.

A lot of people I know use Acid Pro, too. They're young bands, though.

plugging amp straight to the computer is a TERRIBLE idea, you might end-up with a destroyed computer.
Buy a Pod Studio GX (http://line6.com/podstudiogx) or a Roland UA-4FX (http://www.rolandus.com/products/produc ... rentId=104), they are some external soundcard in which you can straight plug your guitar/bas. Stay away from M-Audio stuffs and internal sound card, they suck.

About software, I personally use Sonar X1 Producer. Studio is ok too.

I have sampled farts with the highest microphone definition and distortion is never a problem. Maybe you could try Macs?

Anyway, you need proper recording equipment to record stuff properly.

I use things like the Line6 TonePort and software like Cubase, which is simple enough for even someone as technologically useless as myself to slap together semi-decent recordings. People have suggested good stuff in this thread as well.

Long story short, you don't need an amp for home recording if you just want to make demos and stuff.

Yeah, most of the people listening to your music will not know the difference if you are plugging straight in to a USB device with virtual amps and such. But to the people that will tell the difference, they might get REALLY ANGRY that you aren't using ENGL tube amps with 8 string gutiars and 36 frets recording straight to analog tape with the lights out in one take.

Your soul is all you need. It will record anything perfectly and in a non-precedent succinct way..

im actually recording right now in a fancy studio (you know fancy for Venezuelan standarts that is) I will show you something when its done.
when I record something at home I dont mind too much about the song quailty because they pretty much end as rough demos.

There are a lot of ways you can record your music. I do not really record music either because I would like to feel my music as I play it live. But for some rare moments, there are a lot of plugs that you can use for the iPhone or iPad line so it will help you better with it.

For desktop applications, I am not sure of how it is going to work either. But you should be able to find it easily.
