Guitarists, give me some advice....

I just picked up an Ibanez for the first time, and i'm not sure where to start. I don't want to waste an instructor's time having him teach me fretboard knowledge and technique, so i would ask of you veterans....

What do you think is the best method to begin familiarizing myself with the instrument? Or perhaps you could recommend a particular method book.

One day i hope to be worthy to lick the dirt from the feet of Steve Vai.

I started by listening to DIO's Loosing my insanity, then started picking the right notes from my guitar until I played it right.

First, learn the metal-rythmics, the correct alternate-picking with some excercise. My suggestion is t take some lesson from someone who is not a genius, because those masters always want to teach you even useless things and want you to have their position and so on...
First, learn Metallica's stuff, quite simple songs, then go to other stuff.
Don't forget the most important things: feel the guitar as a part of you, and play with your ears!

I have no idea what kind of guitar it is, other than that it's an Ibanez....it's my buddy. :D

I'm going to check out all that web-related stuff tonight, as it is the first instance in which i will have the available time to do so. I really appreciate the help that all of you have given me. I will let you know how i'm doing. :)

Book of children's songs....that's a damn good idea. I ended up with Progressive's beginner book, which i intend to use to learn the note locations on the fretboard. God, am i glad i already know how to read music, or i'd be really fucked.

I also picked up a book called Rock Discipline.....by John Petrucci. The man is incredible, so hopefully he's written some helpful exercises for fast picking and better accuracy and such.

Oh, it's an Ibanez Gio, which i recently found has been reviewed as a good beginner guitar....so i lucked out on that one. I named it Distant Skies. I love it more than i love my boyfriend. Is that bad? I'm serious.

I don't know that series of Ibanez... but they are all good guitars anyway.

mmmhh, you'd better change him then (the boyfriend!) ;)

Start with a Mel Bay chord book and playing hot classics such as "Mary had a little Lamb".

Then give the Smoke on the Water riff a shot.

Then try some Crazy Train by RR.

Things should fall into place from that point on.

I think that the guitar is quite simple to understand. everything is presented so clearly on the fretboard, the piano shows much clearer though how it works. The main point here is that the guitar doesn't need a manual.

Just go at your own pace don't rush I've been playing now for 8 years just start off easy.
1)pickup a stage1 book
2)learn all of your notes to the fifth fret
3)pickup one of your fav band book
4)learn the song and then practice on your soloing

now I know your thinking why up to the fifth fret with the notes trust me
the notes just repeat

Qiuck tip: A,B,C,D,E,F,G thats how the notes evolve just add in the sharps and flats in between and GOOD LUCK :D

And listen to your heart. It's the only thing that will guide your fingers the right way. At least it does it with mine ...

Lessons keep learning the guitar less of a lonely process. Trying to learn how to play an instrument is very antisocial.
