does anyone know what is the best Marshall amp to get for 300 pounds?

None...

dont know about the prices in UK, but for that money you could only buy a transistor amp here... and there are quite a few good alternatives out there. The most expensive part about a marshall amp is the Name... and i think that the MG series is way too expensive...

How do you rate Peavey amps? - I've got one at the moment but I'am looking to upgarde, hence the interest in the Marshall

I can warmly recommend Marshall JCM2000 DSL401 if you like a good tone. Not that cheap though but maybe second hand? Mine failed in less than a year with very unexpected symptoms and many people unfamiliar with the fact tube amps often do weird things might've sold it really cheap as "broken". After all it was just preamp tubes failing and the cost to fix it was like 10 pounds. Haha.
