probably nothing that they wont tell in a vocal class ( well, some of this may be stuff they will tell you to not do lol. I don’t know), do exercises, take care of health, listen and try to emulate different styles. play around with breathing and vowel exercises. Play around and experiment with sounds and placement of the mouth, Sing along to different instruments

Always keep water next to you, don't let your throat dry up, avoid air conditioning AND NO SMOKING.

They are going great and I can hear that my voice is getting better everyday.
I made a cd with at least 5 of my favorite songs that I sing along to at least 5 to 6 times a week.
I'm still hoping that I can meet my goal of starting a band within the next few months and eventually releasing an album and touring with some of my favorite bands.
it sounds hugely ambitious but I really believe I've got the drive to do it.
oh yeah and anybody who tells you singing is easy obviously can't sing

Congratulations, that is great to hear!!
No, singing is not easy at all. It is the purest expression of human emotion in my opinion, but hard work to do it healthily.
You have to really WORK to get free with it, ridiculous as that sounds. It took me years to get rid of tension in my voice. Tough stuff. Hope it continues to go well for you!

I do some backing vocals for my band, live stuff and no, singing is not easy. Good to hear you're progressing, keep us posted! Maybe even post a clip

Once I have the technology I would really like to post something up for you all.
unfortunatly at the moment I have a computer that's very limited.
However I can keep you all posted as to my progress, all I can say at the moment is "so far so good"

If your vocal teacher is not as adequate as to make you think you´d get more help on a forum then find another teacher..!

Actually he's helped me out tremendously, my technique keeps getting better, I wrote this thread up when I was still new, a lot of stuff has changed since then.

Well that's what I'm hoping, right now I'm still figuring out my financial situation however once I've got my footing back I will definatly try and send you all a vocal demo.
Most of you all know many of my influences so I'm pretty sure your going to know what to expect as far as the musical direction I'm going with, though as far as vocals my range is more Eddie Vedder then Timo Kotipelto.

Thank you Emma, I completely agree, there are way too many Grunters and Shriekers out there and a lack of proper singers.
I do make a few exceptions but my overall opinion is that it is very sad that more people are getting music with singers who yell their way through a song then getting proper singers who just sing.
I'm definatly gonna try my hardest to change that fact.

Practice scales, don't strain. If your voice hurts, stop singing and rest it. Otherwise just consistently practice, and over time, what was once difficult to sing becomes easy.
Can you do a Mickey Mouse voice?

Some teacher taught me the mickey mouse thing. Do the cartoon voice as a warm up after the lip rolls and stuttering D's. It supposedly opens up the head voice and increases the range.
I bet TK can do an awesome Mickey Mouse judging by his higher notes' timbre!

I'll bet, mine is more of a lower range like say Scott Stapp or Jim morrison
