Nightwish
Tuomas Holopainen always said, that his biggest influences were stratovarius, and that you could hear this on the wishmaster and oceanborn album.. well i couldn't make out any similarities btw stratovarius and nightwish songs except we hold the key and come cover me.. has anyone an idea?

On Once I hear no more Strato influences
I think because of that I don´t like this album very much
Re: Nightwish
not really, nightwish is gothic metal..
Well I'm a big fan of Nightwish, although it has nothing in common with stratovarius

It doesn't matter, it still sucks. I don't like female lead vocals in metal.

off topic:
oh lol
i hate such discussions about the metal styles...
call it just metal or rock, it would be easier for all
to topic:
i would not influences compare with riff stealing
@dave: you look like a really true metaler for me

Let's get back to the genre topic.
I think, that Nightwish plays symphonic-power-heavy metal. But yes, the most important is, that they play metal, and I like their music. \m/

I think there's almost no similarity between the 2 bands except the double bass drum.......
In Nightwish's song the component of keyboard is more than guitar's
the guitar always plays only some simple power 5 chord.....
but in Stravovarius' songs the component of gutar is more than keyboard's,
it also has big ,long, fast guitar solo

Re: Nightwish
correct, in Stratovarius the guitar has a bigger role and in Nightwish the keyboards. Does this have something to do with the instruments the composers are playing? most certainly does.countryangel wrote:

Re: Nightwish
I like Nightwish. But if chicks can't sing metal, go listen to some Arch Enemy. That lady has more balls in her voice than many guy singers i've heard!

I know, and I like Arch Enemy. But if you didn't know you would say it's a guy singing.
But the singing from a girl in a gothic dress sucks. No offence, but I find that music very frustrating and especially that empty background music what they call metal.(in general, not nightwish)

Re: Nightwish
Well man, THAT SUCKS (IMO), first Tarja Turenen is a graet singer, she has a nice poweful voice, and she know how to control it, use it. . . .mango wrote:It doesn't matter, it still sucks. I don't like female lead vocals in metal.
Secondly, it is nice to hear such "mix" btw the heavy metal+strong lyrics+a girl voice. It truly makes a nice tune.

However, my favourite is Nightwish, which I was always considering as a Power (Symphonic) Metal band.... Until Once which is not power metal at all...
And about the topic. Ok, I think they might have some similar melodies in a couple of songs but they're not copying them by any means...

yeah i've listened to "The Spell", it's great, but sounds a bit electronic, like the drum samples in the new within temptation album...Destiny_SOS wrote:listen to a band called lunatica and get the album fables & dreams then tell me if females suck at singing metal, this album is brilliant. best album i brought for 2004

so what exactly is the difference between symphonic and gothic metal?

Re: Nightwish
I don't like nightwish. I think Strato is lightyears away from them in anything that is measurable between two bands.
And I think that they are pop-metal with infuences from technically more advanced styles, just to say "we're good".
Anyway, I still like a few of their songs, beacuse they are a few of them that are worth to listen to.

Re: Nightwish
Well, I just wanna say that in my opinion Strato and Nightwish haven`t very much in common.
And Nightwish did not steel anything from Strato, their styles are very different.
I don`t think these two bands should be compared because they are so different. Nightwish is far more dark and sad and I have to say they`ve got better material. And I have to say that I prefer Nightwish before Strato, they are much better.

Re: Nightwish
Welll. I prefer Strato, because in Strato's songs there's a similar feelings with mine. Nightwish has a few good tracks. I agree that Nightwish's songs are quite "fantasien".
But like I said. I prefer Strato.

Just listen to the keys in Wanderlust, Crownless or Gethsemane for ex., it sounds very "Jens-ish" to me.

Naa.. Maby. But I still don't think that Holopainen had copied anything from Jens. But a copu of tea, mate!

Re: Nightwish
Nobody said he "copied", but he took inspiration from Jens, that's for sure. And I don't remember which one but there is a NW song where the keys solo sounds very similar to Jens' in Infinity.

Re: Nightwish
btw: on once tour nightwish played "Symphony Of Destruction" by megadeth together with jens and tuomas on the keyboards and marco on the mic..
and they got a few more guests, like wilska from finntroll (on the live dvd and oceanborn album) and tony kakko from sonata arctica (on the live dvd, too, and the over the hills and far away album)

influences
Ok, we all have different tastes. Some people don't like them, others (like me) adore them. Each to their own. I just want to say that Nightwish are hardly gothic. It irritates me how people abuse the term "gothic" nowadays. It seems that any band with female vocals and symphonic arrangements is called gothic. Gothic metal is dark, hauting, depressing, heavy (both in musical and emotional sense). Bands like Lacuna Coil are gothic through and through. Nighwish has some gothic elements, especially on Once album, but it's not a Goth Metal band by definition.
Back to the topic, I did notice similarities with Strato on Oceanborn and Wishmaster albums, especially the latter. On Wishmaster, they play fast melodic metal with keyboards and Tarja's clear soaring vocals. On a couple of songs, the guitar and keyboards share the solo in turns, like TT and Jens do. Well, whatever you guys think, it is definitely power metal, and Tuomas (the keyboardist and composer) said himself that he was influenced by Strato.
End of story.
