I used Stratovarius in my primary school music lesson today!

Lol! It was awesome! I put a load of songs on a tape (or parts of songs) and got the kids to describe the mood of them, how it made them feel, what it reminded them of, what would be happening in a film if it was the soundtrack etc (these kids were 10-11 year olds). One of the songs was a 2 minute section of 'Elements', about the 8-10 minute mark, with the ace solos by Tolkki and Jens. I asked the kids to draw a picture inspired by what it made them think of.

As soon as I can get to a scanner I'll post some of them. They're seriously funny!

A good few of the kids said that it was their favourite song of the lot too! :o

I haven't managed to scan them yet. I'll get onto that tommorow and hopefully have them up not long thereafter.

Here we go! (at last!)

I love the size of the drum kit, the amps and the expression on Kotipelto's face. Not sure what happened to Jens though...

However, this was what I found the most funny. Kids were asked to draw a picture of what it made them think of. This is just a small sample from a very common theme.

You are absolutely right. As long as you don't choose anything too inappropriate or something that's full of fucks I see absolutely no reason why children shouldn't be introduced to as many different experiences as possible. It's the only way that they'll get to make up their own mind what they like for themselves. I also think that such an exercise as this, where they are being encouraged to get some emotional value out of music is a crucial execise.

I'll definately be doing this again when I'm fully qualified.
