-21°C :omg: where do you live Patricia ?
I lived in a little village called Loupiac, situated on the Garonne valley.
This exceptional temperature was in winter 1987.. We had 50-60cm of snow during almost one month.. But i've never seen it again after...

Ehh, well, we have a band already, but from this forum only StratoFactor and one other spammer whose name I will not reveal here (yet) is in it. Stratofunius and Pikkusielu have their own "projects".

One winter we had about -50'C. It was cold as hell, but usually it is somewhere between -25'C - -5'C

And yes, Hotel Kakslauttanen is pretty near Ivalo. A bit south from Saariselkä.
Maybe we should't count that minus 50 C temperature, it was the extreme in here. But hey are you in now in this topic as an official answerer?

But, is Ivalo a city like a state or something like that?
Do u Finnish have that?

Well, no and -if you mean like USA- no... or yes, but the "states" aren't autonomous and every "state" have the same national laws. Ivalo is the "D.C." of (I don't know what's that in english but I call it: ) "commune of Inari". I hope you got your anwers.

What about the school system in Ivalo?
Well we have:
1. The Kinderkarden (5-6yr, 2 grades)
2. Elementary School (7-12yr, 6 grades)
3. Junior High School (13-15yr, 3 grades)
4. High School (16+yr)
As you can see, we start the school at the age of 7, unless you go to Kinderkarden. Strarting Elementary School one year earlier is possible. And after Junior High School, you can only continue here in Ivalo to High School, because we don't have a Vocational School here.

The laws?
We have the same law system as in everywhere else in Finland. A bit too big thing to explain, so you must ask something specific about it.

Are there stop signs almost in every corner?
I remeber seeing one somewhere. They don't even appear on our main roads.

But, is Ivalo a city like a state or something like that?
Not a city. Not even near. An almost peaceful town in the county, or should I say, "commune" of Inari as Pikkusielu said before. Not sure about the right english word either. Our village is the capital of it. There are many other counties, or communes, or whatever they are as well.

Oh, I know what u mean.
It's like....:

Finland>Inari>Ivalo?

Or

Finland>Ivalo>Inari?

But....I still don't get the "village" thing.
I mean...is Ivalo THAT small?
That can't even be called a town?...at least?

I guess I'm too use to big buildings and mass transportation.

Are there speed limits?
Do u have highways?
Do u have American cars over there?
What car is the most use?

How many high schools are in Ivalo?

What about the postal service?
Tell me about the phone company
And the electricity.
Water thing too.

Are police cars all around the "village" inspecting?
Do u have police at all? :P

And firefighters.

What about the medical system?
Do u have insurances?

I'll come up with more questions later.

[Edit]

What about the social class?
Are there like higher classes?
I mean...rich ppl?
How do they behave respecting other classes?
What's the name of ur president and vice p?
How many banks are in Finland...or Ivalo?
What are the names of it?

It's Finland>Inari>Ivalo. Oh, and Ivalo is actually a town. I accidentially wrote village there. Inari is the village thingie here (among many others).

Are there speed limits?
Yes there are, but some people don't even care about them. At the town it's 40km/h and outside it's usually 80-100km/h.

Do u have highways?
Never.

Do u have American cars over there?
At least I've seen a few Chevrolet pick-ups here. We mostly have European cars here.

What car is the most use?
I think in the seventies, Lada was the most common car here. Now they have almost disappeared when people started to have money to buy a better car. Now we a pretty equal mix of different major car marks here.

How many high schools are in Ivalo?
The one and only: "Ivalon Lukio"

What about the postal service?
Well, the mailcarrier drives every day around the town putting the post on boxes. You can find out more of our postal service here www.posti.fi

Tell me about the phone company
The biggest one here is Sonera. Might be a little more expensive than most others, but its very reliable and high quality. Then there are many more (at least for cellphones). Some are good and cheap, some are not.

And the electricity
Our electric company is called Inergia. The price of electricity has gone a bit high now, but it's tolerable. We have had sometimes power failures due to lightning or just to some problems the electric company sometimes has.

Water thing too
We have clean and fresh water provided by "Lapin Vesi Oy" Some houses have wells attached to water faucets.

Are police cars all around the "village" inspecting? Do u have police at all?
Yes, we have police, but they usually just do nothing. If you're lucky, you might even spot a lonely police car patrolling our main road. But its pretty peaceful here, so there's not so big need of them. Sometimes just some stupid teenagers start drinking in our park at night and get caught. We even had a shop robbed last year. Or was it two years ago... The robber got only 50 euros and got caught embarrassed

And firefighters
We have them too. Don't know the actual amount, but at least we have four-six fire trucks. They do the job just fine.

What about the medical system?
We have a hospital, pharmacy and a few dentists here. The hospital can handle a reasonable amounts of patients, but they cannot have operations there. Most of seriously injured patients will be moved to the city of Rovaniemi. They also do the operations.

Do u have insurances?
Yes we have. Pretty many of different insurance providers too.

What about the social class? Are there like higher classes? I mean...rich ppl? How do they behave respecting other classes?
Well, we are all almost equal here. Of course there are people who are richer than most of us, but they don't differ from the mass and no-one mistreats anyone by class. Actually the only people who differ from the ordinary people are the few bums and the most famous of them all, "Cekkeri". We respect them more than ourselves. They have made this place a lot funnier to live in!

What's the name of ur president and vice p?
Our president is Tarja Halonen and our vice president is Matti Vanhanen.

How many banks are in Finland...or Ivalo?
Here in Ivalo we have three banks. In Finland at least seven.

What are the names of it?
Sampo, Nordea and Osuuspankki here in Ivalo, and Suomen Pankki, Säästöpankki, Tapiola and Aktia somewhere else in Finland. And then there are the investment banks EQ, Macister and EVLI.

A big amount of questions you had...
"When night falls
she cloaks the world
in impenetrable darkness.
A chill rises
from the soil
and contaminates the air
suddenly...
life has new meaning."

Yeah, right. I don't know if we have that big centers anywhere in Finland. Shopping Center = bigger than the sum of all our noteworthy shops = Not very big.
Equinox wrote:How many TV channels do u have over there?
Generally three but yesterday I noticed that we have now 8 more cause of the DigiTV. Well, only two of them works correctly without errors.
Elazul wrote:What about the unemployment in Ivalo and Finland ?

Unemployment level of Ivalo (and commune of Inari generally) is quite high, well, quite very high. In 2003 unemployment level of the whole "commune" was 18,9%.

Does Finland has like a national sport?

Ice-hockey... or it used to be but we can't play it anymore like in 1995 when we won the world championship...

Does Finland or Ivalo export anything?

Finland generally is a big name in electronics (Nokia is the best example) (and wood cause we have plenty of that). Maybe MetalManiac knows more about this topic.

Are the electric or whatver cables underground?

Municipal heating pipes are undergroud but electronic cables aren't.

Is there any famous bridge?

Well, I think the germans burned it once (they burned the whole village) when they were retreating because of the our peace treaty with Soviet Union (WWII).

What is ur national dish?

I'm not sure, in Ivalo it's roast reindeer or "poronkäristys". Again I leave the question to MetalManiac.

Day of indepence?

6.12.1917

How many parks are there in Ivalo?

In Ivalo there's one or two, but just walk any direction and you have a endless park ahead.

Actually, the term "national sport" refers to the place of origin of a specific sport, not to the amount of people that practice the sport. For example, soccer is the most popular sport in Italy, but it is not the national sport because it wasn't invented there.
The same goes for ice hockey. Ice hockey is the national sport of Canada.
But anyways, I'm sure that ice hockey is the most popular sport in Finland. :)

The sprint contest involved men covering a 235-metre course while carrying their wives on their backs or shoulders. Obstacles on route to the top spot include log barriers and a water zone.

Winner's prize was a barrel of beer equal to his wife's weight.

Swamp football must not be forgotten.
Swamp football lends its origins to Finland, where it was invented by the Finnish army in the Nineties.
 (from BBC!)

Image
The sport itself follows exactly the same rules as football but is played on a muddy bog.

And then is this sport of killing as many mosquitoes as possible in a designated time.

And this sport of lasting the longest in Sauna!
