Hey folks, I'd like to start a discussion about that sort of music which many metalheads simply see as a traitor of our genre: New Metal.
What do you think of it in general? Are there bands you like? Is it really pure commerce? Well, what IS new metal? How far does it range?
I'm excited to see if this will develop to such an aggressive discussion like in other metal forums...

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
Personally I must say that I'm into both sides: The "classical" metal side, and the Alternative/NewMetal side.
For me NewMetal started with some legendary (but more or less unknown) bands like Snot. Then came Deftones, KoRn, ... Later Limp Bizkit. The whole music developed into some kind of commercial direction, since it combined heaviness with chart-compatible HipHop or Rap-Stuff, like e.g. Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park. And as many kids started listening to it, "true metalheads" got angry about the unknown experience that some other hard music wasn't revolutionary anymore, but on top of the charts.
Nevertheless, some of the bands stayed faithful to their roots. And the genre brought some really great bands to life. IMO their music is able to express somehow more than many classic metalbands, that seem to have very tight musical borders.
My absolute favourites are Deftones, System of a Down, Semtex, Snot, Ill Nino, old stuff of KoRn, 36 Crazyfists, Killswitch Engage... There's really a couple of good music in that direction.

I like KoRn's 'Follow The Leader' album, there are some good songs.
System Of A Down is actually quite good band
But all these Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park etc. :yuk:

I like only System of a Down... actually, they are not real Nu Metal. They are far better than nu metal bands generally.

SOAD is great indeed. I also like Limp Bizkit's "Significant Other", dunno why but I think it's pretty good.

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
I'm not a big fan of SOAD, but I don't think they're Nu-metal either. And I think they're pretty good, it is just a genre that I don't appreciate.
Early Korn have some nice stuff.. same goes for Deftones.. I just feel that there's too much noise and too little skill and melody in their music.
Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park aren't worthy of my comments.

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
Of course! Max is doing New Metal since ROOTS...Sepultura created that somehow(but, started in Chaos A.D.), they're the fathers of this style, i think. The last Soulfly album is great btw, to be honest, the best of them.Dave wrote:does soulfly count as new metal, too?
Most of the new metal bands sucks, except few ones that i like: Korn, System of a Down, Soulfly(some songs, i cant hear those ROOTS influence in every song).
Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and others that appeared in this "wave" like papa roach were just fashion...

The way i see it: anyone can be a purist about it if they want, but the fact of the matter is that this IS how metal evolved and branched out. Live and let live.

I believe that Nu Metal target is depressed teenagers... those songs feelings are pain, disgrace, everythings is bad, at least that's what I feel, and that hooks up all 14-17 average stressed teens that doesn't know much about music....
that's my opninon from what I've seen here

Well, umm....I began listenging to Metal 'cuz of that wave, but I don't like that much those bands anymore.
I mean, I buy Stratostuff, and other metal bands....but I would never I think, buy any merchandise from those bands, I mean, I dont' care about them that way...
Anyway, I don't like any of those band u mentioned above.
The only band I like and I'm not sure if they're so Nu metal is Incubus, now those guys KNOW how to play the instruments.

System of a Down is OK. I give them credit for going against the grain and being different, I like how they have incorporated their ethnicity into their music. That makes them cool in my book.
I don't know if Rammstein is considered Nu-Metal but I like them, even though I can't understand a word
Korn and the rest of the Rap-Metal bands could fall off the face of the earth for all I care.
Bands that wear Halloween masks, D-tune their guitars, know only three chords, and couldn't play a guitar solo even if forced to at gunpoint can drop off the face of the earth as well.

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
Haha, yeah, that old Manowar-song! whimps and posers... I think Manowar are the greatest posers on earth...
But another thing: Some said the music isn't that complex. In terms of the guitars I agree. But listen to what those drummers are doing. Damn, that's hell of pretentious! I really like that groove that most of them have! Know "digital bath", Deftones? "The heart and the shape", 36 Crazyfists? Those groovy bastards...

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
You can call me closeminded, but I think that style doesn't even deserve to carry the word "metal" on its name.
I simple don't like it, not a band, not a song.

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
Someone said, that nu-metal is not metal at all. I think the same too. It's just a way of trashing and saying vulgeric words, nothing serious plays.

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
well, I wouldn't say that. Of course, there are some bands that seem to be very enthusiastic about using the word "fuck", etc.Beast_Pete wrote:Someone said, that nu-metal is not metal at all. I think the same too. It's just a way of trashing and saying vulgeric words, nothing serious plays.
But there are others with really good vocals/lyrics. And only trashing? Nah... The drumming is ways more complicated than lots of boring "classic metal drumming". And there is really some excellent song-writing. Think of some SOAD-, Deftones-, 36Crazyfists- or Semtex-stuff, for example.
And: Is there really a fixed definition for "metal"? Because, for me metal means distorted guitars, clear bass and drum-playing (no synthetic stuff), no or only few synthetic effects to be used (that's for example something I absolutely hate about some newmetal-bands: that whole dj-sampling-shit), and somebody who sings. That's it. Of course this is a wide range for a definition, but everything else would be too tight IMO.
[hey, this would be another nice topic to start: "the definition of METAL" ]

Re: What do you think of... NEW METAL???
SOAD is not 100% nu-metal, so this is, why I could easily write: nu-metal is not metal.

I agree with you... for me, it´s not metal. METAL is something absolutely different to the music these bands plays.....
