huh my dad often describes strato as devil-music, too, but he doesn't mean that serious, everytime he hears some metal bands he says it's devil music.. but as i said, he's just making jokes

Spamming is serious business!

Re: Stratovarius... "Devil´s Music"??!!
I.m a dad and your parents were wrong to even to ask you what type of music that you like. I have a daughter of 17 and one of 15 and I have always respected their musical tastes ewven when I was blasted out with the Spice girls for what seemed 24 hours a day.. Believe me, it was THEM who kept asking ME to turn the music down. So now that you are away from them, believe that you are and were in the right and stop doubting your own ability to be a part of the human race. And, lastly. when you have got kids, respect their musical tastes as much as you expect them to respect yours.

Your parents will never understand what they did to you, nor do they want do. They're mentally ill, possesed by some sort of "devil" which is called religious fanatism. The evil and the devil lies in things they don't understand, like metal. They are not bad people because of that, but their ignorance and stubbornness can be quite annoying from time to time.

stay relax! my mother trusts in god very strong, she's not so happy with my sound but she say that is my business. ask your parents what their parents told about theyr music? about the hippie-era? about bands like the "uuuuh-ugly" black sabbaths? deep purple? or steppenwolf? alice cooper was a "satanist" too in his time in the 70ies or kiss, the same thing.
anyway, my mother doesn't like my sound but my father likes it! he goes to concert toos like strato or freedom call. show your parents the stratolyrics and explain the content of it - they are nor satanistic nor evil in other ways.
and now listen find your own voice and BANG YOUR HEAD!

Re: Stratovarius... "Devil´s Music"??!!
try to translate some songs for them, i mean, if anything Strato could be confused with a religous metal if not for the absence of god or religion per se (fantasia is kind of an exception cuz it said "imagine a world, without anger without a hate, no religion, no god, just your own truth...") but that is not the point! it is a VERY positive influence!destinygirl wrote:I do know, my parents are quite clueless and ignorant people, but what I can do really to make them to understand that Stratovarius is just about ´music´ - and not about ´evil´, or anything alike for that matter??Grambambuli wrote:Your parents will never understand what they did to you, nor do they want do. Re: Stratovarius... "Devil´s Music"??!!
Not exactly. Don't you think it has also some good points?StragOvariuS wrote:Ahh...regilion SUCKS!!!

In this "Strato's devil's music" thing it sucks big time indeed, coz they don't respect people who don't believe in the same god and they listen to metal so they become directly to admire satan, they say. It's of course not like that, they're wrong, you're right.
But religion has also good things, it matters much more on the earth than you can even see. So let's not exactly say it sucks.

I used to think religion is the worst thing on the earth, until I met some people who believe and saved their lives by believing.
And indeed, the discuss about it will never end, it seems

Sorry, this might be a kind of offtopic, but had to say.
There're actually some metal bands who write more "dark" lyrics than Stratos. And IMO Strato's lyrics are much better! They're just Tolkki's thoughts about life and stuff. Anthem of the World is a great song with its great lyrics, indeed! :headbang:
See you.

On the topic about Number Of The Beast, I saw this as interpretation on the Book of Revelations. Many people being deceived by something that is not what they think it is.
but anyway, this thing is nothing new. This has been happening since the grandfather of metal (being blues music) has been in existence. There will always be some assholes who want to ruin things for people and in as a consequence push people even further away.

Re: Stratovarius... "Devil´s Music"??!!
First off, your parents were WAY off base with Stratovarius. It's obvious they never bothered to read the lyrics.
When I was a kid, 1986-1987, in 5th and 6th grade my parents put me through similar experiences. I hated it. I got around it because I was sneaky and made copies of all the tapes I thought they might take away. (tapes, yes, back in the day, before everybody had CD's- Do they even make cassettes anymore?)
It didn't help that back in those days Metal was being blamed for kids committing suicide, and violence against others. It also didn't help that my Mom didn't work, stayed home, watched Oprah, and other similar shows, and had tons of free time to go through my stuff.
To me it felt like the Spanish Inquisition. I always felt like I was on trial. To be fair, she did carefully examine, in her own way, my stuff before making a decision to take it or not. I was still left with great stuff like Yngwie, Van Halen, Dokken, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, etc. However, stuff like Slayer, and Motley Crue were taken. I could handle them taking those two bands, but I couldn't deal with them taking my Maiden stuff. Thats where I drew the proverbial "line in the sand". I was able to show them that Maiden wasn't "bad", and was allowed to have them back. Just having to go through all that sucked, and it pissed me off, and I didn't understand why they would start up with me about my music.
As an adult, and now 30 years old, I see what they were trying to do. I still might not agree with all their decisions. I believe in some instances, they simply didn't understand what they were looking at. Their hearts were in the right place, misguided perhaps, but in the right place.
It's funny because all this stuff is tame by todays standards. If I had children there is no way I would let them listen to "Gangsta Rap" until they were mature enough to be able to separate fantasy from reality. If they wanted to listen to Rap they could listen to Will Smith, LL Cool J, or someone like that. I see too many kids emulating these guys, acting out on it, and ruining their lives. So I guess we all, to some degree, become our parents. I would always study whatever it was thouroughly, then sit down with my kid and discuss it. A decision might be made after the conversation. I would be fair because I know how it is on the other side of the issue.
I have said this before here in the forum. My life would have been so much easier if bands like Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater, Nightwish, Rhapsody, and Symphony X existed when I was a kid. I believe they would have liked the music, and even the lyrics. My Mom and Dad liked Yngwie and Steve Vai.
Stratovarius, I believe, is a postive influence. Their music always puts me in a good mood. Puts me in a positive state of mind.

Re: Stratovarius... "Devil´s Music"??!!
My parents never cared too much, despite being quite religious. They knew I wasn't going to go around killing people because I listened to Emperor or Mayhem. In my opinion, someone who'd do that would do it anyway regardless of what music they listened to. They allowed me the freedom of listening to whatever I wanted. I think the only time they showed some *sligh* concern was when they noticed, about a year after I'd gotten it, that one of my tshirts was a Rotting Christ one. But they just asked me, gave me a disapproving look, and then started talking about football.
I guess I was lucky. I've seen people go through a lot of crap with regards to this.

Yeah, i believe that those kinds of people do not respect you if they think you are going to act like that because of music, i mean, there is some free will inside everyones head and it takes more than Maiden or even Rotting Christ to loose it up.NeonVomit wrote:My parents never cared too much, despite being quite religious. @ Destinygirl: Holy shit, I'm so sorry that happened to you! I can only imagine the trauma that caused you. as we all know, stratovarius is anything but the devil's music.
that narrative reminds me of stories of parents sending their kids to be un-gayed at some program or something...
also, it makes me think of one of my favourite books, "Oranges are not the Only Fruit," by Jeanette Winterson (her first book). it's partly fictionalized, but it's really based on her own life, growing up in an evangelical household in this weird little town in england somewhere.
DestinyGirl, if you can get your hands on that book, read it-- it might help you, or at least give you a sense of comfort that someone has gone through something sort of similar.
thank you for sharing your story with us. I am glad that you are living away from your family and trying to get your mind and life in order.
