The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest particle accelerator complex, intended to collide opposing beams of 7 TeV protons. Its main purpose is to explore the validity and limitations of the Standard Model, the current theoretical picture for particle physics. The LHC was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), and lies under the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland.
The LHC is the world's largest and the highest-energy particle accelerator. It is funded and built in collaboration with over eight thousand physicists from over eighty-five countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories.
The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). Initial particle beam injections were successfully carried out on 8-11 August 2008, the first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC is scheduled for 10 September 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October 2008.
When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and missing links in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.
Although a few individuals have questioned the safety of the planned experiments in the media and through the courts, the consensus in the scientific community is that there is no basis for any conceivable threat from the LHC particle collisions.
LHC is scheduled to start-up on 10 September 2008. On this day, the very first attempt to circulate a beam through the entire LHC will begin.
The first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled, on 21 October 2008.
When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and missing links in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass. The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why gravitation is so weak compared to the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized particles, models and states might be produced, and for some searches are planned, including supersymmetric particles, compositeness (technicolor), extra dimensions, strangelets, micro black holes and magnetic monopoles.
When in operation, about seven thousand scientists from eighty countries will have access to the LHC. Physicists hope to use the collider to test various grand unified theories and enhance their ability to answer the following questions:
* Is the popular Higgs mechanism for generating elementary particle masses in the Standard Model realised in nature? If so, how many Higgs bosons are there, and what are their masses?
* Will the more precise measurements of the masses of the quarks continue to be mutually consistent within the Standard Model?
* Do particles have supersymmetric ("SUSY") partners?
* Why are there apparent violations of the symmetry between matter and antimatter? See also CP-violation.
* Are there extra dimensions indicated by theoretical gravitons, as predicted by various models inspired by string theory, and can we "see" them?
* What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy?
* Why is gravity so many orders of magnitude weaker than the other three fundamental forces?

Yes, it's on wedenesday that this machine is launched.
And ok for posting your thoughts about it on thursday, if you still can, of course...

Re: LHC - Large Hadron Collider
there is a movie, "When 2 Worlds Collide", now its "When 2 Penises collide"! Either way, total destruction!
Seriously, nothing is going to happen. Its like when Edison plugged in the first light bulb he thought it would explode, but we all know it did not. The list is endless. Its just technology at work, exploring new worlds, crossing boundaries. No more, no less.

Re: LHC - Large Hadron Collider
Well, I've just read an interview of a french scientist called Aurélien Barrau, than you can find there :
http://www.futura-sciences.com/fr/news/ ... rau_16425/
He tells that there is no risk for the world to be trapped into an artificial black hole...
I suggest the scientists to watch their own asses if they wanna see some black holes...

Uh, guys, they only turn it on tomorrow. They won't be colliding anything until 21st October.

Re: LHC - Large Hadron Collider
Hello everybody!
I'm watching streaming broadcast of the 1st beam in the Large Hadron Collider. All is happening well. So, there is no reason to be afraid of a catastrophe.
I will post regularly some news. Now the beam is into the third section of the circle.

The beam has just completed the tour.
It took nearly one hour! Good point. And we are still alive!

Re: LHC - Large Hadron Collider
The benefits are multiple.
First, it will help the scientists to find the origin of the mass of the atoms, this origin is the Higg's Boson. It's an important element from the atom.
Imagine a flower. This flower is composed of molecules. Those molecules are made of atoms. Those atoms are made of eletrons turning around protons and neutrons. Neutrons and protons are made of quarks. The heart of those quarks is composed by three elementary elements, among them is the theoretical Higg's Boson.
Second, the collider will help to understand what is the black matter of the universe and what is the origin of the universe (Big Bang).
Third, they want to discover the antimatter.
And finally, they want to create some little black holes in order to discover worms holes (Einstein-Rosen's bridge), which are supposedly separating our universe from other dimensions...
It's a really interesting experiment.

Is this the thing that supposed to end the world?
I saw something on Star Trek once which resembled this, it was called The Doomsday Machine, or something......
It looks hungry.

Well it can't destroy the world because that's the job of Jesus and there's a lot left to go in the book of revelations before he can do that. Of course with the way some preachers talk the large harden collider will destroy the world and we all will go to hell for not converting them to heterosexuality through prayer sessions.

Not dissing southeners, it's just a funny accent that reminds me of some black women(they DO talk like that) I've seen in New Orleans.

I'm sure if you look through the book of revelations enough, you'll find something that symbolises the LHC :picecab21 wrote:Well it can't destroy the world because that's the job of Jesus and there's a lot left to go in the book of revelations before he can do that. im sure there are some letters in that book that if put into a number system and then assorted into the correct order would spell out Large Hadron Collider.
