Not exactly. Playing someone else's piece and adding your own touch to it can be a homage of sorts.

Plus it's just fun to play a bit of music you like, even if it isn't yours.

Yeah but like, that's like someone playing a cover of say The Unforgiven by Metallica and totally changing the solo. It's so iconic and familiar to the listener that totally changing it and filling it up with loads of technical stuff would just alienate everyone else. The ideal thing to do would be for the guitarist in question to play the solo as it was originally written, but interpret it in their own way, much like classical pianists will perform a Beethoven sonata the way it was originally composed, but with their own interpretation.

Essentially, its almost like Mataias is gonna be playing covers. So he's got to like, stay close to the originals, but at the same time feel free enough to add his own spin on it because he's got the existing fans of the band to think of. Since the context in which the music is being performed is that of a bunch of fans of the band's back catalogue, that has to be respected.

Really though this is a bunch of emotional intelligence psychobabble that I've been having some seminars on and I hope it wears off soon because lately I come across as a tremendous faggot.

uhhh...what's wrong with what you posted? Every time I've seen Megadeth the guitarist at the time nails the Tornado of Souls solo note for note. Since Strato and Mega are so guitar oriented I think most people at the shows will be listening for familiarities. It's kinda like saying "hey, I m good enough to play this and I can still make it my own". So yeah, I 100 percent agree with what you said... fag!

I wasn't talking about the solos in the song. I was talking about the instrumental pieces like "Stratovarius", "Stratosphere", "Stratofortress" that were often used the guitar solo section of the setlist. And I think Matias would rather like to play his own guitar-solos in that section, assumed there is one, than just playing a Tolkki piece.
