I am actually pretty careful about power consumption at home, and that usually reflects fairly well on my monthly power bill. I do remember the old-style bulbs had to be replaced a lot, and hearing them "pop" ever so often did tend get a bit annoying.JensJohansson wrote:I think the flicker of CFLs is at a much higher frequency (like, kHz) than normal light bulbs (60 Hz). Those old fluorescent tubes are the worst, at least with light bulbs with a filament the filament smoothes out the 60 Hz flicker a bit... so in this case you can save on your power bill, have to bother less about replacing them, and save your migraine medication bills.miditek wrote:I'll burn whatever wattage lightbulb I please, and Gore can kiss my ass. FWIW, I prefer lower wattage bulbs indoors, but not because I'm worried about what Gore thinks, but I've found them to be less of a strain since my eyes are a bit more sensitive to bright light than the average person's.
If you still feel like pissing off Al Gore and harming the environment using CFLs, just throw them in the normal garbage after they break, since there is a little bit of mercury in them.
If you are hardcore and feel like harming your immediate personal environment, break them inside your house to release the mercury gas there, and then put them in the garbage.
Not that I'm the type of person that's actually in to harming the environment as much as I actually enjoy finding whatever material I can to discredit Gore and his ridiculous and now at least somewhat discredited theories that he had turned into a cottage industry.
To paraphrase Churchill, "He's a bitter little man, with a lot to be bitter about."
