On the subject of influences

Here musicians can talk to each other about making music etc. Of course if you are not a musician you are still welcomed to this board, but the topics should somehow be about making music.

On the subject of influences

Obviously, this being a Stratovarius forum, in some form or another, they've affected all of our musical styles. So, that discussion aside, who are the bands you really look to to mold your styles around, both in your individual playing of your instrument, and in your musical development as a whole?

For myself, I would say that I put Black Sabbath and Deep Purple at the core of everything I do. Being the first, (And arguably, purest) metal acts, I feel like they embody the spirit of what I want to do with my music. The guitarist Buckethead is at the next layer of my guitar playing and my composition, not for his frantic, highly technical shredding, but for his calmer, and incredibly fluid way of composing guitar tracks, both acoustic and electric. So from the Purple/Sabbath roots of a very heavy, distorted, blues sound, I try to add that artistic fluidity to compositions at time.

From that core of a song, I'll then look to whatever style I want to emulate. If I'm doing a straight heavy metal song, I will go back to Black Sabbath, in particular, their first album and paranoid, for the blues sensibilities to top off a song with at evil twinge to it.

For something oriented towards Power Metal, I will try to keep Stratovarius and Angra in mind, and because it's hard to keep that straight with the Sabbath, generally the Deep Purple roots will take much more precendence to mix with what's going on on the topmost layers of the song.

For a more "Artistic" approach, to stay in line with the buckethead influences, I'll just stay within a scale or a scale progression, and improv around them. Really explore what's at the core of that scale, and how it relates to the emotions I want to convey with my music.

Unfortunately, I am terrible with lyrics, and most songs get stalled midway into their conception or writing for various circumstances, because it's hard to bring it all together without a band to work with, as my only real strong areas are bass and guitar, and a lot of what I need to do relies on vocals, drums, and either the Hammond Organ or some form of a synth.

But yeah.
Influence thread.

I think every musician starts "borrowing" some stuff from the bands that he likes the most, is a nice starting point since you get the practice and learn the how to do it right!! originality and style will come years later.

For me, "fourth dimension" was the moment, Every time I hear that album I find something new in the production, an of course from that moment on Stratovarius was everything for me :)
nowadays, I could dame Avantasia, Queen, Michael Kiske, Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden...that mix Queen+Kiske+Avantasia plus Stratovarius Is always on my mind when comin up with songs! Some day I guess Ill be able to say -freedie would be proud of this!- and I could die in calm.

The bands that got me into metal were Stratovarius, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath.

The bands that really affected my guitar playing were/are Iron Maiden, Stratovarius, Led Zeppelin, Gamma Ray and Megadeth. I guess Yngwie may have had something to do with it, too. Though I don't consider myself a fast shredder.

I'd say bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and Jethro Tull really broadened my music taste and influences, especially on the acoustic side. The original reason I bought myself a capo was to be able to play Thick as a Brick :D

I do lots and lots of stuff in music. Off course I like playing Strato-style metal. Also Kamelot, Epica, Nightwish and others have influenced my style a lot.

On the other hand I am currently busy with a good friend of mine making a Pop-CD wich is more or less in the style of Lady Gaga. My friend Sarah is a really good singer and we really enjoy making this CD.

My musical taste is very, very wide. It ranges from classical, to classical crossover, to jazz, to latin, to pop (espacially electro-pop in the style of Lady Gaga and others), to ambient, to new age, to alternative, to rock, to metal. I can hear and see beauty in almost everything. :)

Power metal melodies, thrash metal riffs, black metal chord progressions, death metal atmosphere, classical techniques.

That's how I roll.

Why? I enjoy listening to metal music all day long, and I'm happy with it. And don't get me wrong, I respect the ones who listen to this kind of music and others not even related to it :)

Maybe weird to say it again but, I agree with you. There are so many genres of music that I think it is a shame some people only listen to metal. There are definately other kinds of music they would like if only they would open up to it.

I have a one man project of my own, that does metal covers of video game themes, mostly Legend Of Zelda. In the solos try to incorporate neoclassical Stratovarius styles, but for the other instruments I experiment a bit more. Like for the drums, I love to have a Norwegian black metal influence - eg. Dimmu Borgir, Emperor and bands that generally use very fast paced kicks.

For the rhythm guitars I sometimes like a small bay area thrash influenced style here and there, similar to Annihilator or Metallica. And when I play the keyboards I try to increase the melody, something like Ensiferum. So I have alot of particular influence - I like to play around with them, though without using too much particular inspiration. I'd say I try to sound like alot of those Northern bands -Norway, Sweden Finland. Can't get enough of that 'epic' whole sound.
