Not really so surprising. But, some have been "making friends" with people they find suspicious just to find out information. Which borders on invasion of privacy in a sense. It has been discovered that the government can somehow crack into private profiles in order to read them.

So, as some have found out the hard way, be careful what you post. It may come back to haunt you. ;) Seriously.

Sometimes, the Feds have problems keeping their own employees under control. ;)

United States Department of Justice workers among government Wikipedia vandals

I can remember in the mid-90's when the CIA and Dept of Justice websites were vandalized- those were the days!

The CIA banner was changed to "Central Stupidity Agency" and the DOJ was changed to "U.S. Department of Injustice".

One of those sites (can't remember which) sported a picture of Founding Father George Washington with a clever caption (see attached pic).

If it means catching child rapists before they can harm anyone else, then go for it. It may have saved this girl's life.

Also, if there are any terrorists or people whose hatred toward the government is serious, and not just rants then, I could see an investigation.

I think people are very aware of the dangers of social networks. Parent should know what their children are doing and who are they talking with; it's not a responsibilty of the goverment but the parents who allow things like this to happen
