Noise and loud people in public places
Is anybody else here annoyed when people are VERY loud, or crave attention in public places ?
I find that very annoying, and I can give a few examples:
Today at the railway station, there were a few people playing very loud music while waiting for a train.
Also, many people like to use mobile phones to yell, shout, talk about their feelings in such a way that the other party can probably hear them without the damn phone!
One more thing is when people have mobile ringtones that can wake the dead, especially on a very quiet night train where everybody is sleeping!
I seem to think that these people are either "attention whores", or really really arrogant to think they have the right to disturb other people in public places, but that is just my opinion ofcourse...

Re: Noise and loud people in public places
Some even seem to do it without thinking. Especially here in Finland where, generalising, people are generally keeping low profile anyway, and then comes a loudly-speaking latino-colored pair to the spot and starts to yap the hell out of our own little peace.
I don't usually hate those loud people. I can make sure I have my headphones to stuff into my ears whenever needed. Also, sometimes these "attention whores" you mention are quite entertaining, and it's actually fun to listen to their deep conversations. This goes exceptionally well together with drunk people.
I'd still like to point many people draw attention without them even thinking, at least here in Finland. We can be so small and earth-colored (or so we say), don't-look-at-me-or-talk-to-me-cause-we-don't-know-each-other type of people.
This being said, while attending to the Gamma Ray/Freedom Call gig a while back, I tried to ask from about six people which direction should I take to get to the venue. No-one helped. Even though I was perfectly clear, most of the people completely ignored me. THIS is much more ridiculous/irritating than the opposite. I think I had exceptionally bad luck that time, though, even when we're talking about Helsinki... ;P

Ok, maybe I was just too pissed off and overreacted...
@Intiaani
Yeah, I know what you mean. I have also tried to ask for directions before with no help, and that is annoying. You are also right that it is sometimes entertaining to listen to all those rich conversations full of feelings, also with drunk people (even those who invite you for a boat cruise the next day).
And I have nothing against those people, especially the ones who don't do it on purpose.
I tend to adapt to the environment; I have been to countries where everyone is very LOUD, and there it's ok. Also on a "festival train" to Tampere to see Iron Maiden, it's ok.
However, sometimes it is very annoying, like on a night train to Helsinki...

Re: Noise and loud people in public places
I typically keep the ringer on my Blackberry off at all times during the day. Since I wear a holster, I typically set the device to vibrate for incoming calls and all other message types.
The only time that the ringer is on is when I plug the phone in to recharge before I go to sleep at night- in the event that there is a family emergency or something like that.
If I am in a restaurant or other public place and notice that I get a business or other important call, I'll typically step outside so I won't disturb others.
Also, some of the conversations that I have can often be confidential and/or related to network security, which are certainly things that I don't want to be overheard.
When I'm in church, the phone is set to silent mode with no notifications at all. If someone is calling then, they'll just have to wait.
Just my two cents, but I've learned over the years that a bit of common courtesy can go a long way.
I don't like hearing one end of a stranger's conversation, and it is particularly annoying if they are loud- and I won't subject other people to that sort of behavior myself.

Re: Noise and loud people in public places
I can agree with the phone thing. I'll be innocently minding my own business on a (relatively) quiet bus, when a group of chavs start blasting the latest gerbil-voiced techno remix of a remix of a cover of a popular 80's song on their phones. Add the incredibly "tinny" noise you get from mobile phone speakers and you get a very, VERY annoying noise.
I've got no problem with people using their phones for their intended use, though.
Loud people aren't necessarily 'bad' I suppose the world needs them! But it's 'loud people who feel the need to annoy others' that I don't get. Those that swear, shout across the street to others, start fights, etc. etc.
Oh well, what can ya do

People who play music from their cellphones should be shot on sight. There's a great invention called earphones that lots of people forgot about ...

But it is true that in your culture people are louder than here in Finland.

Re: Noise and loud people in public places
Of course, I agree, what I said it's also true. We love attention, we are as socially/culturally mature as an apple. When I say "we" I mean at least 90% of the people that live in these areas. The other 10% are sane, or at least a bit. I can't seem to understand your northern culture though, I don't believe the media. Is it that no one talks unless it is completely necessary or something like that? No jokes on the streets? no innocent insults? laughs? just plain silence and shy stares at the ground?

We don't generally like to talk to strangers, when people are walking the streets with friends it might be louder, and if drunk very loud.
But there are talkative and outgoing finns aswell ofcourse.

Re: Noise and loud people in public places
Yeah, but then again, there are can be some pleasant conversations if you bother or "dare" to try it sometimes. A moment ago I was in a shop buying some lemonade, and I talked to a lone cassier there quite a bit. It wasn't anything special, but it was nice anyway. Brought some color to the shopping situtation. I couldn't help but think that maybe she thought I was drunk because I started talking in the first place... It happens so seldom here. Maybe as I'm now delivering newspapers for my summertime job, I am more into starting discussions with complete strangers even during the day though.Kosmo wrote:We don't generally like to talk to strangers, when people are walking the streets with friends it might be louder, and if drunk very loud.

Yeah, and this whole Finnish vs. "latinos" is of course a rude generalization.

Yeah, those with service occupations are nice nevertheless. They're paid for it. But yeah, it's pretty nice city anyway. I have nothing against it.AGAG wrote:Would you still recommend Helsinki as a good place for me to go in vacation?
About teen girls' blabber... yes, irritating. D: The same goes with (pre-)teen boys yelling their own business out loud in a public transport. I don't actually even know other cases in public transports other than teens or drunk people that make noice.

Sounds nice!
I'd love a place like that for some relaxation. I don't care much about noise, just about peace and stuff like that. And the cold! that must be awesome..

As if there was any cold now. New heat records everywhere. This stationary air and scorching sun just isn't my thing. At least not too much smoke in the air from the annual out of control forest burns from Russia at the moment...AGAG wrote:Sounds nice!

And I don't think there has been much snow in Helsinki in the winters recently if you're looking for that.

And they make out like pigs. Has anyone seen a couple having oral sex in an half-empty movie theater? It is a surely interesting experience!
