Hot sweaty steel, a woman's fingers on my gun…
Cock the hammer slowly, and aim it at your love
Put my barrel in your holster
Like a velvet glove

Arnold Layne had a strange hobby
Collecting clothes
Moonshine washing line
They suit him fine

On the wall hung a tall mirror
Distorted view, see through baby blue
He dug it
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?

Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Now he's caught - a nasty sort of person.
They gave him time
Doors bang - chain gang - he hates it

Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
two to know, two to know, two to know,
Why can't you see?

Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne
Don't do it again.

Can you guess the name of the song?

Arnold Layne

Martin Walkyer used to write great lyrics while he was in Skyclad.

Jon Oliva didn't really write any lyrics for Savatage from Hall of the Mountain King onwards - Paul O'Neil would do most of them. But yeah, some great lyrics, especially in Gutter Ballet and Edge of Thorns. My favourites are James Hetfield, Bruce Dickinson, Martin Walkyer and probably a few others I can't think of right now.

Ahhhh, I see I see! You have made a mistake. Things like this happen all the time, don't worry. This is the video you had in mind:

I'm sorry, but this one I have to give this one to Kakko for sure. That's my taste :)

[The Premonition]

"Remember when I told you how my
Kin is different in some ways?
And how you should not fall in love
With someone like me, anyway...
Between the lines, people see signs
When they feel the sear, every day's fear...
And one night their torches
Find the girl without a name...
And the one who has her
Love is no more safe..."

"And until I get my peace I'm but a shade..."

[The Witch-hunt]

The sun lit the White Mountain's snow covered peaks,
There I see you, amongst the good people, suffering...
"She is the One, the unwanted, decidedly so,
'cause she makes our children cry.
It's a fact, she is exactly that!
A harbinger of death from the world of Witchcraft,
And she's feeding them cakes and her ale to this innocent boy,
And her magic brings dismay..."

[Exposing The Heathen]

"I hear her in the wind, the bane of our town
Come with me, father, I'm to expose a heathen"

In my home town
No one's safe now
Young love's been forbidden
For five-fold kisses, my only love had to die...

[Envy]

"Your crops are all flourishing, so what's the catch?
I know what you are, the new evil unhatched...
As sure as the dawn, they will hear what I know,
And recognize you, and you'll be cleansed too..."

[The Fear]

For the good, trusting people in town,
In their fear stricken hearts,
Seeing skyclad's a sign like the Deathaura,
Every night, so painful's the memory of love in the dark.
One wheel of the year ends their short lives in fear

"I hear her in the wind, the bane of our town.
Come with me, oh, father the heathen is exposed."

[The Grudge]

In the age of burning times, you saved my life
...The blaze grew ever higher.
I was your Cunning Man... hiding in the light,
Now your land shall go sour...

Your own fears will destroy everything
Envy consumes all, and "thou shall not..."
Though it hurts, I must tell you
"I am truly the One
...Behind it all..."

[The Curse]

In the hands of time we all will die
The dead of night will devour your child...
The creation o' beliefs you've been fed
The fear, the unknown, the poison loved by death.

[The Flames]

In the cool of the night air
Flames purify minds, where
Almost anyone could be the next...
"Unless morning finds all of them somehow hexed..."

[Endless Inquisition]

[Instrumental]

[...Together, Today, For All Eternity]

"I remember how you told me,
Your kin's different, on that sunny day?"
"You made me smile,
'cause I was just about to say the same thing..."
So deeply entwined, love of a lifetime...

But they paid someone to say their torment has a name
And after all these years we get to be together for all eternity...

I dunno.. I find a lot of the lyrics on the first couple of albums don't really make a whole lot of sense :? I guess they're better now than what they were.

Kakko is surely a good lyricist, but I mainly like his lyrics from WHG-Unia era.

Matt Smith is definitely good though. Mirror of Souls is one of the best power metal epics I've ever heard, party because of the lyrics. Also, he managed to write Christian lyrics that don't annoy me. Only other guy who managed to do that was Eric Clayton on the early Saviour Machine albums.

Glad to see Walkyer getting votes, he's one of my top choices too. I also like his new ones with TCD.

Another of my personal favorites would be Devon Graves (from Deadsoul Tribe/Psychotic Waltz). Fairly good lyrics, that amazingly fit his music.

Mikael Akerfeldt writes some beautiful ones.

I arose from the lullaby
Enduring yet another tale
You tempt me again
With your embrace, so tainted
Within the night you beckon
Cursing me with every glance

Bring me through
Carry my empty shadow
And guide me inside your warped labyrinth
To the well of sin
I swear I will always love you

Leave me speechless
Release my yearning
The soil I walk is clad with light
Drifting moons thrust me with their rays
And I fall inside

I lament this heritage
Cannot bid farewell
The pale face...you went as far as you could
And from that moment
I witnessed your beauty, felt your death

Mine is yours, mine is yours

In the wake of dawn
The mist of morning linger before it leaves
Invisible eyes, red reflection
It is you
Smiling in the midst of the moor
"Beneath the freezing sky arrives Winter's Verge..."

for me is adrian smith (that was an obvious choice isnt?)...wasted years is such and anthem and metal hit....that among others songs adrian had wrote or co wrote in maiden.

of course then you have steve harris , what is left to be done for this guy in metal??.., other favorites of mine includes, Tobi sammet, Tony kakko of course, Tuomas Holopainen (he is the best keyboarder-writer in metal I know) James Hetfield and Lars...and the list goes on.

I think some of Tolkki's lyrics are some of the most brillliant I've ever read. I also like some of John Petrucci's and Kevin Moore's lyrics from Dream Theater. I like Kakko's and Tuomas Holopainen, and I really like Liimatainen's lyrics on Cain's Offering.

:) Keep the Flame.

The Shadow falls on me today,
Why can't it fade into the distance,

And darkness calls, no other way,
I rage at the riddle of existence,

The day's almost gone, but you'll carry on,
Can you keep the flame for me,
The day is almost gone, but you'll carry on,
Can you keep the flame for me.

A broken plan, a fleeting past,
How do we always keep on trying,

A tired man is free at last,
What would the purpose be of lying.

My life is almost gone, but you'll carry on'
Can you keep the flame for me,
My life is almost gone, but please carry on,
Could you keep the flame for me,
Will you keep the flame for me.

There's some wonderful lyrics, where Matias is involved, like Darkest Hours and Elysium. Personally I don't like Kotipelto's lyrics, what he has done alone. He can make a lot better lyrics with Matias. For me Sleep Well is one of worst lyrics I've ever heard.

^ Darkest Hours has good lyrics? :puke: at least somebody enjoys them. I love these lyrics...

Swam around in circles, in an angry ocean
and a dream of safety, just a lost emotion
could a faded notion, make you find your way back to shore, looking for more
So we head for safetey, but we never get there
and I brush the shadows, from a scary nightmare
on this road to nowhere, will you help me carry my cross and set me free?
