Ebooks

Post by NeverendingAbyss » Fri Jul 31, 2020 1:59 am

Anyone owns one? I have a kindle paperwhite. I was reluctant to get one because I liked the "feel and smell" of holding a book, but it's so much more convenient to carry than, say, a 500 pg book.
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch?!

Tablets? I’ve never had the specific one like that. I do have a kindle fire. (10 years old.) Replaced battery in it.

Originally had a nexus. Battery and software updates pretty much bricked it.

I like to use the kindle app across devices due to it syncs up. Even my 7 plus with the bigger screen is ok to casually read stuff.

My favorite was to just sample books and then finding the pdf for free.
I also use an iPad that is a couple years old. Not for books, for using amplitube and my iRig and casually some games with an iOS controller. I’ve always been a broke bastard so it’s either been given to me or I got lucky and had an extra 100 bucks to buy a crappy one.

I haven't read a book in years  I just don't have the attention span for it. I wish that weren't the case since it seems like a fun hobby, all those fantasy novels, etc.

I bet you read the articles in porn mags.
Jk. Who has magazines anymore?? ???
They’re available on those tablets. How I yearn to turn virtual pages of ads for tide detergent and tampons. 😍

No, I try to keep my gadgets to a minimum, I hate bugs and malfunctions. I'm a librarian and every time a customer asks for help with our ebooks I'm like "ummm I don't know, read the instructions", it's pretty embarrasing.

I’m from middle of nowhere buttfuck, USA. The best this town can do is have a library with books that nobody gives a shit about. With computers from 1998. If you ask them to get a book they just say that’s too new of a book to have there.

lol we are well funded compared to buttfuck places. While not the fanciest place there is, we do have stuff like 3D printers and all the latest console games, in open shelves waiting to be stolen by junkies who threaten us with shitting their own pants

  All ebooks have their own method of how they work. Your problem is equivalent to a retail worker who is asked if there's any more stock in the back.

This is what originally got me into ebooks. I use Calibre to convert pdf files to mobi. Works like a charm! I have a Samsung Tab that I use for textbooks in pdf.

I find myself with the same problem. I read too much online, especially news. It's distracting to have a phone that can do so much. I downloaded Overdrive (and I can put my library card in it) to check out ebooks.

I used to be a vivid watcher of The Daily Show. Most of the books I read came from the books they advertised in the show. I miss Jon Stewart.

Guys, I don't think I've ever read a book of my own volition. They put me to sleep. :tired:

This seems to be a really common problem today and I think you're right, what it boils down to is technology and how insanely stimulating it is, all these social media companies have genius level people trying to figure out how to hook us on their apps and they're doing a good job. A lot of teachers I talk to at work (a public library) tell me that kids' ability to read and write is clearly going downhill.

So there I was, in high school. It was the end of the school year, so we were playing Clue (a board game) and I was playing as colonel Mustard. There was this girl and every time I said "colonel", she gave me this weird look. Every time she had to say "colonel", she said it really awkwardly. She clearly had no clue how to pronounce it or what it even meant. Clearly, she's never played Megaman X4, so she has no clue about colonel's spelling/pronunciation.

On a semi-related note, I won my class spelling bee somehow. :? Am I smart or is everyone else ignorant?

Anyway, instead of books, I just read articles on Wikipedia and the like. I don't bother with social media, unless it's to talk to robocop on FB. :cyclop:

Yep,
Apps are designed to try to get your highest attention and they’re all competing for it. That sweet dopamine rush is way more stimulating than sitting there and reading a book for people. :~(
