I think that power metal is starting to gain some ground again, I am running into more and more people who are wanting melody in their metal rather then just the same old "heavy and loud" crowd.

I suspect it's an ebb and flow thing really. Speaking for nobody other than myself a few years ago I got really burned out on all the pomp and cheese in Metal and started to listen to less melodic, more crushing sounds. A few years after that I started getting back into Prog and Power Metal since I was starting to find that I couldn't muster up the energy needed for thrash metal/DM.

I don't see why being a fan of heavy and melody is mutually exclusive. My most popular artist in the last 7 days on last.fm is kyuss, #2 is strato, those two are very night and day.

Yeah... I love power metal, but I'm also a big fan of death metal like Nile, Origin and Cannibal Corpse and a lot of black metal bands like Rotting Christ and Emperor. Listening to one thing doesn't mean you can't like another, but I know plenty of people who are fans of either which can't stand the other. This concludes today's hiro23 impression (no offence buddy, just realised that my post eerily mimicked your style)

This has got me thinking... all future arguments on this matter should be resolved the Harry Hill way. Those who live in the UK will understand what I'm talking about, for everyone else... I give you this.

'I do like power metal, but then again I like death metal also. Which is better? There's only one way to find out...'

Yeah, there is a pretty huge divide between most fans of power metal and lets say grindcore. I have never met anyone who listens to Napalm Death and then puts on Helloween right after. They are out there though. Just not here.

One of them is right here! Having my ipod on shuffle has been known to confuse some people and cause seizures in others.

Actually I like the fact that you mimicked my style, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I agree that liking both styles shouldn't be a problem, I was merely pointing out that more people are getting a lot more open minded and not just listening to one kind of metal or music for that matter.

Power Metal is absolutely my favourite genre, but I also like Symphonic Metal and Melodic Death Metal.

I like any genre as long as I can hear there is effort being put into the music, I won't listen to it if I think they are being lazy
