Maybe I should have been more clear. The core of the music (lead vocals, guitars, keys, bass and drums) should of course be played live. But if you can make this core even better with a tape for backing vocals and such, I think that's not a sin.

True, but I think it is no problem at all to enrich your performance with some technical stuff if it sounds cool. And IMO it sounded much better with the tape, than with the live backing vocals.

I really wonder if you would just be more satisfied if live concerts were just everyone getting together and listening to a CD really, really, loudly. There should be NO part of a live performance that's prerecorded.

I will! Should I use backing tracks or find a live backing choir when I play it live?

Regarding in-ears, they are a pain in the ass, we tried them for the whole band with Stratovarius around 2003. I agree with what Lauri wrote. To hear the audience you need a special pair of audience mics... a PITA in other words. And if the monitor mix goes all to hell for some reason (.... and they sometimes do) it really sucks.

Regarding backing tracks, I always felt uncomfortable about the fact that it made the tempos the same as the album -- and very difficult to change on the fly (this was 2003 after all). Very often the songs felt slow in a live context.
