What do you think about vinyl records?

Post by Electric Eye » Sun Dec 12, 2004 8:17 pm

I wonder how many of you knows what I mean:) Years ago, before CD era all records were printed in (usually) black pieces made of vinyl. You had to handle with this very carefully, because any scratch on it had an negative influence on sound quality.
Today we have CDs which are more resistant, and quality sound is always the same. But from theoretical point of view, sound quality from CD will be never as good as the one from the vinyl record, but only people who has very good hearing (as well as playing equipment and record:) may confirm this.
The only one thing I regreat, connected with CD, is the size of covers. In case of vinyl records the cover was much bigger. Some covers presents much better in bigger size.
Despite the popularity of CDs, vinyls still are produced, but I think only for collectors, who treat it as a hobby. When I can afford someday, I'm going to collect some interesting records and savour its covers and sound.
I'm writting this, because recently I've purchased 'Episode' and my vinyl interest became alive again:)

Because time of music that might be record on vinyl is shortet than in case of CD, vinyl editoin are sometimes shorter. That is in this case - order is a bit different, and there is no 'Night Time Eclipse', but still, this cover makes up for it and is really impressive...
So where does the power come from to see the race to its end?

I love vinyl, I have a good old record player, it needs new needles though. The sound is great and the tiny scratch sounds in the background make newer records sound like they were made on the 70's.

But when I do, I shall have the stomach and the liver too,
And the floppily doppilies in their horrid glue.

the big deal about cds is that they are, indeed, small, and we can take them (and play them) everywhere. You know, as hard as you want to give it a try, you can´t play vinyl in your car...i guess that´s what it made cds go pop. Although i couldn´t get what´s the deal with MD...what happened? Couldn´t get why it didn´t got success and turned CD to oblivion...

And the pressures of the marketplace

Vinyls are good, but I'd rather go with the good new CDs because its easier to find songs now. Although, most of my folk's music are on vinyl, and I usually try to get a chance to listen to his vinyls, such as Meatloaf, Kansas, Boston, Tower of Power, and such! :P
Somehow I still have an account...yay...?

I have lots of vinyl records. I have enough age to have lots of them, I grew with them, and, although the cd is the best way to listen music ( yes, I admit I don´t download music from Internet!) sometimes I put a vinyl on my player and have a good time listening the carachteristic sound of the "water" of the old records, you know what I mean. I become nostalgic.

My turntable&LP Collection is relegated to my parents attic. I checked on it about a month ago&its all still in good shape, wrapped in plastic&bubble wrap. I made sure the records were not warped or anything. I retired my equipment to storage in 1992 when I went CD---once you go there, you never go back! One day I will get it all down&take it home once again so my son can have a good laugh at what used to be......:)
My tastes in music have not changed that much----I still like Megadeth, Manilow, Elton, Foreigner, ELO, Metallica, etc. I have added Stratovarius to my listening pleasure since then, however---maybe one day I can collect at least 1 of their Vinyls.

I have almost of the records of Iron Maiden and AC/DC, in pretty good conditions, also some rarieties, as records of Metal Hammer recopilations, and also from Kerrang! Some people, time ago, offered me a good money for them, but I refused... I am an old fashioned romantic!

Yeah it must be cool to have some, but I'm too young for this and now they are goddamn expensive. Maybe when I'll have so much money that I won't know what to do with it i'll start a collection :D

No, what seems quite interesting is that they are usually not expansieve. I mean normal editions, not limited ones. Vinyl versions of records relased nowadays are about the same price as CD, and the old ones you can buy on some auctions and sometimes they are really cheap.

You're right, I would never get rid of such collection.

At least are they very difficult to find, especially when you live in some French tiny village :D Anyway I prefer buying CDs with my money, it must be quite hard a deal to transfer your vinyl-music into an iPod.

You can also find them in second-hand shops in big cities, sometimes you can find realy unique things and quite cheap, because usually shop assistants doesn't know their value.
BTW What is the iPod?

It´s hard to have a vinyl collection now ( I mean if you want to start no), when even to have cds is being day after day more difficult, because of the prices, internet downloads and similar stuff.
