I believe they did go downhill since Hellfire Club. Heck, even Avantasia, a project that spawned very true gems in the past (two of the best albums I have ever listened to) is no longer that great.
I still give them credit. I think Tobias has a really beautiful voice, and he's a great composer. Rocket Ride and The Scarecrow weren't bad at all, they just weren't nearly as great as we were expecting. Who knows, one day he'll surprise us again, releasing The Metal Opera Part 3 and Theater Of Salvation Part 2.

Bands should do whatever they please with their music, we got to accept that. I don't like Tobias' attitude towards criticism recently, though. When asked about how the album would sound like, I don't know if it's just me, but I think he sounded a bit harsh and defensive, saying that he doesn't care about what the others may think, but in a, dunno, harsh way. I find it weird, it's almost as if he felt guilty about changing the band's style. Maybe it's just me.
They have a lot of potential, we all listened to what they're capable of producing. I'm keeping my expectations for this album low, though.
