I'm listening to it right now for the first time.

I believe they did go downhill since Hellfire Club. Heck, even Avantasia, a project that spawned very true gems in the past (two of the best albums I have ever listened to) is no longer that great.

I still give them credit. I think Tobias has a really beautiful voice, and he's a great composer. Rocket Ride and The Scarecrow weren't bad at all, they just weren't nearly as great as we were expecting. Who knows, one day he'll surprise us again, releasing The Metal Opera Part 3 and Theater Of Salvation Part 2. :D

Bands should do whatever they please with their music, we got to accept that. I don't like Tobias' attitude towards criticism recently, though. When asked about how the album would sound like, I don't know if it's just me, but I think he sounded a bit harsh and defensive, saying that he doesn't care about what the others may think, but in a, dunno, harsh way. I find it weird, it's almost as if he felt guilty about changing the band's style. Maybe it's just me.

They have a lot of potential, we all listened to what they're capable of producing. I'm keeping my expectations for this album low, though.

Ewww @ "Ain't You A Little Pervert, Too?". Bands doing that kind of direct political criticism should stfu. Not everybody shares the same political/religious beliefs, so if you're going to touch that stuff, at least do it in a subtle, discrete, ambiguous way, passive of multiple interpretations (the way Stratovarius does).

And I'm heavily skeptical towards song names that contain the word "Rock". So far, I haven't listened to a single good song which contained that word. And some bands (Mägo De Oz, for instance) love it. Bleh.

Well, I guess I'll have to wait two more years for their redemptive album (doesn't mean I won't attend their probable 2009 concert, though, of course). :D

Lurdi wrote:What a disappointment. This is not Edguy. This is a new rock band. I have already listened to the whole album and...If they are happy with their new album, it's ok, but I won't buy the new album. I will buy something better instead of wasting my money.
Unfortunately I have to agree. I listened to it more than 10 times until now just to find a reason why to buy it. I haven't find anything  . I'll try to give it another chance later, although I don't believe something will substantially change my opinion.
RazielSR wrote:I'm extremely dissapointed with this album. This is the completely different direction Sammet was talking over and over again? That is the musical evolution?

This album is a completely copy of tons of Rock albums. They are not evolving, they are changing the musical direction and they are making rock (Edguy was a power metal band) and Sammet wants to be a rockstar. That's all.
It seems like this :?

RazielSR wrote:But don't tell me this is an evolution, this is a complete change of style and now it's really bad compared with the old Edguy.
I would call it devolution
RazielSR wrote:In three words: EDGUY IS DEAD.
Almost every band/artist has a moment when they're trying to do something different, something revolutionary or something experimental. Some of them succeed, but usually after one or two albums they find out that it was step aside, so they step back to the original line...not only because the fans are swearing, but also because of themselves and their musical feeling (4 or 5 people in a band playing 15 or 20 years certain music at some point completely change the course - how long can it last before they find out that they like more the things they were doing for 15 years?). For some reason I love all those "back to roots" albums :D
Edguy is not dead, it's still the band it used to be. Although the new album is such a disappointment for many die hard-fans, you can bet your bottom Euro  that live gigs will be worth going to. They will be dead if they make 2 more albums like this.
Texidor wrote:But I guess that is the state of the genre at this point.

State of genre? Why do you think?

However I like the cover :) But the most important thing is not the cover but the content, and I just cannot understand why they have changed so much. TS is very much capable of doing incredible and great music, it's like the spirit of Edguy has completely changed. It wouldn't be weird if they had begun as a Rock band, but they were a METAL band. Maybe they wanna experience some new things and then go back to the roots. When I first listened Ministry of Saints I thought: Well, this is like a second-rate song, I think this will be the most commercial song in the album, it's understandable since they wanna grip many people and the rest of the album will be Edguy's style. However it ended up being the best song in the album. RazielSR and I were going to Madrid to see them in January, but since we don't like their new album we are finally not going there. Fuck 'em! 8) We'll spend that money in several Stratovarius concerts when they com 2 Spain. They won't deceive us for sure!

I just buy the songs I like from every album. It’s cheaper and then I can make my own mixes
The ones I enjoy from this album are. There is a lot of guitar work that i just love from the album.

Ministry of saints
The pride of creation
Wake up dreaming black
Dragonfly
929
Speedhoven
Aren’t you a littler pervert too?

Since the concerts will always have a set list with a lot of songs I really enjoy, when they travel here I will see them.

Listened to it once and I thought it was just an ok album. So yesterday I gave it another try and my opinin didn't change much. Obviously I was not expecting them to do another Mandrake and I am not against bands trying something a little different, but I had seen the video for the first single and liked it. Based on this song, the album seemed "promising" but it is just nothing special. They're one of my favorite bands, so I'm really dissapointed...

You condemned them completely, right?

Better than criticizing the new album somewhere at unrelated forums would be discussion with Edguys after some of their gig

edit:
P.S. I'm listening to radio and right now there's Livin' On a Prayer by Bon Jovi...pretty good song :)

Well, I don't have any problem in discussing with Edguys about the album wherever and whenever. What's the problem? I don't see it.

And I'm just talking about something obvious as you can see

And, as you can see too, the "evolution" has been a copy as I said. And the copy is bigger each day. The problem is that they said "hey this is something completely neeeeew that you've never heard/see before"

looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

EDIT: I'm a bon jovi fan, you don't know how I like Bon Jovi. My "problem" (if you wanna call it problem) is with the new Edguy.

icecab we talked about it a lot in rr forum, I'm sick of this thing. If you don't wanna see it, it's ok. And if you can have some fun with the new EdBonjo album its ok too. I'm happy then.

PS: The same to you blackdeath.

But it sounds like a BAD Bon Jovi clone. Of course the will never play as good as Bon Jovi band.

Just a little review search on google:
Bon Jovi rules! Wake Up Dreaming Black may be one of the worst tracks Edguy have ever wrote (and believe me, I love all of the tracks they've written).
OK even though Edguy is still heavier than Bon Jovi(lol), but there are a lot of parts where you could not help but wonder if Tobias is in love with Bon Jovi

Icecab I'm not wrong, again, if you don't wanna see it it's ok.

The same with that Dragonforce guitar player that you say is more or less the same as Michael Romeo.

I think the problem is somewhere else...

If Tobias had e.g. this haicut

...nobody would compare Edguy to Bon Jovi.

Romeo is the more capable player out of the three guitarists, but dragonforce guitar players have played in more songs that I like to listen to than Romeo has.

Ok Icecab, and the same is happening to you with Edguy.

But don't tell me they aren't copying Bon Jovi cause it is something EVERYBODY CAN SEE/HEAR. OMFG If I had time...

Another simple search.

Haven't you ever felt the need to call Edguy Edgay? Quips about the homosexuality of their genre aside, they seem to be the kind of band that can appreciate such a perverted pun. Edguy was always known for their sense of humour next to their style of metal (if you're unsure of this, just listen to 2004's single Lavatory Love Machine. It even comes with a video clip that is an honest homage to the 80s). Tobias Sammet, band head honcho/vocalist, even recently stated in an interview that he thinks we are all actually just a bunch of perverts and that we should all collectively admit this.

He's even gone ahead and give the proper example, too. Album closer "Aren't You A Little Pervert Too?" is a two-minute country ditty parodying the sexual excesses of the world (yes, a country ditty), and it will leave the listener either scrambling for the door in horror (if you are one of the purists) or laughing out loud, unable to take this seriously at all. If you're of the second predisposition, you're gonna enjoy the rest of this album, as Edguy is pretty much fooling around for half of this (though more in hard rock fashion) , but more serious music lovers that enjoyed Edguy's older power metal side are gonna be rolling their eyes for most of this.

It's funny, because when Edguy actually stick to the power metal, the results are pretty admirable. Opener "Ministry of Saints" contains a golden chorus, some nice downtuned riffs, and the familiar power metal meets Bon Jovi vocals that we've always known to expect from Tobi and co. There's a few more of these golden power metally moments scattered across the album, like the chorus of "Dragonfly", or the one in "Sex Fire Religion", that should appeal to any fans of the style. But when they contrast this to dull plodding failures such as "Wake Up Dreaming Black" (did anyone hand you eyeliner during the lyric writing process, Tobi?), or "Nine Lives", it's when mediocrity starts to take hold.

Most of these songs cannot be technically faulted, though. Edguy are a competent bunch of musicians, but most of these choruses don't stick, and as a power metal band, you need the choruses or you've just lost a part of your fanbase. For a second, half of this album consists of really cheesy hard rock moments, that is going to turn another part of the fanbase off. It may be an improvement over 2006's Rocket Ride (which was just a homosexual hard rock fest), but songs like Thorn Without A Rose that hark back to the best Jon Bon Jovi ballads is something that was tasteless in the 80s, and moreover, it's completely incomprehensible in the year 2008. Dead or Rock is basically the band's homage to AC/DC, which is nice, but considering AC/DC have only ever written one song, it's not something Edguy should be interested to rip off. And Speedhoven is supposed to be all epic and overwrought at seven minutes something, but it's less than epic title and completely sterile songwriting make it take a nosedive about, oh, two minutes in.

I'm sure that fans that love their Guns 'n' Roses, AC/DC and Bon Jovi will love this album, as Edguy have pretty much definitively evolved into a more hard rock/heavy metal outfit than the fantasy power metal outfit they represented before. It's a real shame that they are entering an obsolete genre, whereas more experimentation within a power metal framework or even just merging the two would have been a far more productive effort. However, this seems to take the integrity of the band, throw it all out the window, and despite the quality of the musicianship and the tracks, it's come to a point where Edguy are a gigantic self-parodic entity. And that, to put it in perverted and vulgar terms, is really gay.

After going though all the bon jovi albums, I can't say that I like any of them more than I like this edguy album. If I take a collective of my favorite bon jovi songs vs. this album than jovi wins there. If I take a collective of my favorite jovi vs. my favorite edguy songs, edguy wins that one.

How is that called? Ignorance?

Honestly, I've heard some tens of reactions to the new album and only 2 (=TWO) people said it sounded like Bon Jovi.

Think of me I'm asshole if you want to, but there's no similarity with BJ. At least no BIGGER similarity than the similarity with other rock bands. And I absolutely do not care what somebody I don't know (I'm refering to your long quotation) said or wrote. I'm used to use my own ears, not someone else's.

The problem is that you are comparing Edguy "ex-power metal" band with Bon Jovi, a rock band since the very beginning. WHY????
