Well, it's been here like that till the beginning of the 20th century I think. Since then it's more or less equal here.

I heard yesterday.

Japanese language has 1945 kanjis Commonly used.
But Japanese sounds are 108.
English is 26 Alphabets , but sounds are many about 2000, I heard.
I heard that Japanese is a visual language and English is a hearing language ,
visual language uses left side brain, and hearing language uses right side brain.

Therefore may be Japanese people poor at talking than in English reading and writing.

...and English people may be quite embarrassed with kanji. (Well, me too...)

I usually use "Konnichiwa" and "Doumo".
When I meet friends after a long time, I use "Hisashiburi!"

I asked once my Japanese teacher (who IS Japanese) how to write "himitsu" and he couldn't remember !

But the most embarrassing is "have been known but forgotten". This is only for French people.

Because "Sore wa himitsu desu" is the favorite phrase of a guy from an anime (Slayers), and one of my friends love this guy. It's also my favorite anime but I hate this character and sometimes we have fun with that... the thing that angries her most is when I say "do you think someone who can only say "it's a secret" is intelligent?"

Besides, this character is named Xelloss, but Japanese katakana is Zerosu and I told my friend that his name is the plural of Zero, another proof he isn't smart at all.

I mean than I also forget the meaning and pronounciation of kanji. I've got a very bad memory... but I don't think this can happen to Japanese people, isn't it?

Well
Many cases it will happen to us forget how to write a Kanji.
But probably we remember meaning and pronunciation in many of kanji.

Hm, I cannot imagine how German could be easier than Englisch For me it's almost the other way around although I don't speak English as fluently as German (well, almost).
