On one hand, I agree. On the other, I don't. I think the primary purpose of avatars would be displaying a pic of the boarder but then again, many people like to remain "faceless". And while I think avatars aren't that necessary, a carefully selected one can really add a nice "scheme" to person's posts IMO.

btw I used to have my own pic as an avatar too.

Well, I definitely like the idea of avatars. It's usually easier to identify a persons by a visual than just a text. It's faster for me to get whos post is this. There so I don't like when someone changes avatars too often.
