The very best metal album ever to me is MASTER OF PUPPETS. Only because it's the one which could mix all the best elements of metal, everything anyone of us would like to hear in any album of this style.

Sehnsucht (Rammstein)
Thy Mighty Contract (Rotting Christ)
Symbolic (Death)

so...at least there you have one best of four different styles

think i'll have to go with norda on this one!!

avantasia is the album that means the most to me.. it was the first metalalbum i liked (although i'd liked metal for quite some time, but just some songs here and there, black diamond being the first metalsong ;))

and i've never been so obsessed over an album ever since or before..
