Tsunami disaster in Asia...

What a tragedy. The last number I heard was 59,000 dead and counting. And that will only be the immediate aftermath of the disaster, I fear more will follow for months to come...
Apparently Thai officials were made aware of the quake about an hour before the first waves hit, but chose not to issue any warnings for fear that it might have hurt the tourism industry, in case it turned out to be a false alarm.
You might also recall last year's earthqauke in Bam, Iran that killed 30,000...

I haven't killed him yet sir,
But when I do, I shall have the stomach and the liver too,
And the floppily doppilies in their horrid glue.

This is horrendous - 9/11 was an insignificant nothing in comparison to the gravity of this tragedy. I really feel for these people. I would rather that to have happened here than there - those people have barely anything to start with and now they have nothing at all - this is too sad.
Re: Tsunami disaster in Asia...
I wonder who W would attack if this had happened to USA... Anyway, this is indeed a tragic event, I didn't have much time to read/watch the news recently so I heard little about this, but it's enough...
Re: Tsunami disaster in Asia...
He'd probably come after Canada. After all, it has to be SOMEONE'S fault.
But rest assured, Bush would definitely attack someone for this act of Nature. I wish a 12 on the Richter scale would open up the earth and swallow the motherfucker whole to be honest.

It's up to 70,000 now (although estimates put it closer to 90,000). This is just horrible...

I feel slightly relieved, a friend of mine was in that dissaster but he is fine. I thought something happened to him because he hadn't contacted anyone.

I'm glad to hear your friend is alright. I know a few who were in the region at the time, but they're all alright.
The official tally has gone over 100,000...how many more?

That must be relieving for you. Actually my friend was kinda pissed off when he called, because the embassy contacted him and told him to go home. He had been in Thailand for a few weeks, it's like his second home.

This is a horrible tragedy which expands every day.
My advice is to drop wasting your money on fireworks this year and send the money to those who need it.

Sky News is reporting the death toll is up to 123,000.
I found an article about it here: http://news.com.com/Quake+may+have+alte ... g=nefd.top
(although it says the quake may have altered Earth's rotation)

Actually yeah, I've heard about it before. If you think about it, it was a massive redistribution of Earth's mass, so obviously it had to have had some effect.Equinox wrote:What? 6cm? 0.002 secs? CNET news wrote:When one huge tectonic plate beneath the Indian Ocean was forced below the edge of another "it had the effect of making the Earth more compact and spinning faster," Gross said.
The Earth's poles travel a circular path that normally varies by about 33 feet, so an added wobble of an inch is unlikely to cause long-term effects, he said.
Scientists have long theorized that changes on the Earth's surface such as tide and groundwater shifts and weather could affect its spin but they have not had precise measurements to prove it, Caltech seismologist Hiroo Kanamori said.

The news networks are giving the final death count at over 200,000.......but, I am hoping a sizable portion of these people simply have no way to communicate&will be found lost, but alive soon.
