I live among rap/hip-hop listeners, I don't have anything against it....well...only that most of NYers muzik talks about violence and sex and "I live by the gun, and die by it..." But in overall...no, I don't.

I think....

I may change my opinion after Cliff's post.

I deeply hate rap, at least most part of those bands.

In my opinion, they play a game.
Most of their lyrics talk about tolerance and respect, but they are the first persons to criticize or insult people who, for example listen to other genre of music. You have no idea how many times those stupid rappers who lives in my town had fun of me, just because I had long hair or a "Metallica" shirt. They absolutely want other people to listen to the same music than they do, and if you don't, they are ready to ripe your clothes off and cut your hair!

They also talk about how to "behave" good, but they spend most of their time writing on the walls, breaking stuffs, burning cars, stealing things or getting into fights. At least that's what the people who listen to rap do, in the place I live.

There is also a real difference between what they sing and what they look.
They always talk how difficult life is, that they had lot of problems in their past, that they had no money and stuffs. But in their videos, they show themselves with golden teeth, tons of golden jewels, expensive clothes, expensive racing cars, they are full with drugs (and last but not least expensive whores).
How can people agree with the lyrics (especially people who really have problems in their life) when they show themselves like this, full of money and with a extrreme high self-confidence.

And about the "music", I think it shouldn't be called "music" at all.
Perhaps they have a good rythm in their speech, but there is nothing musical in it. No melody, no music, just sometimes basic samples in loop that they took from some old funk. They can't even sing any single note in the tune. Thus, the way they speak (their speech) in their songs is extremely agressive in my opinion. People always claims that metal is only noise, but it is nothing compared to rap.

Of course those people listen to the shit they want to listen to, and I listen to mine. But I still deeply think that rap sucks.
I'm so surprised that it sells so much nowadays, especially in USA and France. Fashion stuff, hopefully.

Music was Bach, Beethoven, Mozard, Vivaldi. Then, it was Elvis Prestley, The Beatles or Queen. I feel pretty fucked up, thinking that some people nowadays have never heard of the names I have just mentionned, but consider rap bands like Sniper (one french racist band) or Snoop Doogy Dog like best band ever. Pretty sad and pityful, but still...

I might sound rude (actually, am I not always ???) but I only gave my opinion.

I hadn't heard anything about Sepultura since they released their best-of.
I guess it's not a good sign, i mean that if they were good, everyone will still hear of them. "Arise" was such a great album.

Ok the music i hate: Emo, Rap(unless is the beastie Boys!), Ska (tends to piss me off), commercial pop music, Nu metal(most)

Ok thats what i hate. I think Rap in its earlier days wasn't to bad becuse the people had a message to get out. Now adays its a big joke! People are rapping just for the money. I think the reason I like the Beastie Boys is because they know its a big joke and rap for the hell of entertaining people.

I just hate rap. Can't do anything about it. I'm glad Finland is more to metal music.

yeah...they still on. but without a good record company, without strong songs, with nothing. its almost dead.

that's why 80% of the setlist are old songs...the new ones are so much simple, you can hear, like it and bla bla bla...but IMPOSSIBLE to compare with Arise, Beneath The Remains, Schizophrenia... :? another good band DEAD.

but I through they were on RoadRunner Records ?

In my opinion, Roots (and Chaos A.D, somehow) was the beginning of their death.

At first they were really brutal (and good!) death metal, but then they played more accessible music (i heard Roots Bloody Roots in a big FM radio here)
It's always difficult when a band radically changes his style. For example Amorphis lost 70% of their fanbase.

I think the leaving of Max is the main reason why the band doesn't have so much success. He was such a charismatic leader.
On the other hand, it seems that his new band (i can't even remember the name) doesn't have any success neither. What about Brazil ?

They were on RoadRunner, but RR didnt re-signed their contracts with the biggest names of there in late 90's(sepultura, obituary, fear factory)

Roots was the beginning of new metal, unfornatelly sepultura was the "door" to mix another elements with metal. Chaos AD its a good album but they choosed since this album make simple music more and more, maybe that's why they play hardcore now.

Max leaves Sepultura becoz his wife, gloria cavalera, had a discussion with the other members about contracts and she was trying to make the band be "american" like she did with max, they were so distant in the roots tour and the others guys said that only max appeared on pics, videos and all. 96 they were so much famous with a bad album.

Max formed Soulfly. its a newmetal/hardcore/metal band, its so strange choose a style for his band. but if you compare both, max always do huge american tours and good european ones, always with slayer, black sabbath, ozzy...in another hand, sepultura make few shows outside brazil in the last tours and i think that they only played with motorhead in these years.

Max nevermore did a gig here in brazil, he is american...100%

My attitude to rap is mostly the same attitude to all music (with its exceptions).
I find some interesting things in rap, i think all styles are interesting, or at least they deserve my entire respect, but not for those who don't even play with their hearts or do sincere stuff...unfortunately there are many "artists" doin' souless music, not only in the pop stream, but also in every genre there are people who just care about fame and money, and don't give a shit about playing quallity stuff.

Rap is for people who are tone deaf and can't appreciate music.

I can't stand it. Music can either serve to help the human condition or it can hurt it. These are the words of Phil Collins. I remember him being asked this same question and I remembered his answer. I couldn't agree more.

I hate sounding like my parents, criticizing things. But I am now 30 years old. So I guess I can see their point.

Rap is destroying kids here in the States. Nowadays rap music comes with an agenda, dress code, and a destructive attitude. Basically, from what I have seen, it beats into your head hatred of your country, hatred of the police. Hatred and distrust of white people. Worse, I have even heard lyrics that are sympathetic to the terrorist animals that have killed thousands here in the States, in Madrid, in Israel, and now in London. Whatever your opinion is of things and politics, no sane person could possibly condone the actions of terrorism.

I am not all for conformity and having everyone walking to the same beat. However I feel that a person needs to be able to function in society to be a productive citizen of the world. I don't think it is the responsibility of music to promote good qualities, but I do think it's counterproductive when it promotes violence, anarchy, abuse towards women, and not owning up to your responsibilities (fathering children and not providing for them). While rap claims to bring people up, it is actually bringing people down. You can't get ahead in life with these attitudes. We all have to live and function together.

Jesse
