The 100 greatest...

Here musicians can talk to each other about making music etc. Of course if you are not a musician you are still welcomed to this board, but the topics should somehow be about making music.

Great! I'm going to look at theme now.

I noticed: Best hard rock/heavy metal guitarists; 43. Timo Tolkki :P

He's listed #149 in Rock Guitarists, I don't think he deserved a better ranking (I'm pretty sure he would agree to that)

Yeah I second that, he deserved at least a spot in the top ten (not to mention havig his name spelled correctly). What also disturbs me is not seeing Anders in the top 100 most skilled drummers...

well the list is a bit inaccurate, tolkki deserves a better score than petrucci, so does malmsteen, and i think the "best _____" really boils down to personal preference

Tolkki higher than Petrucci ? Are you all right man ? This is not about your favourite but about who is the most technically skilled and influential. And JP kicks TT miles away in both. I won't say anything about Malmsteen cause I know him very little but if you rank Tolkki among guys like Becker, Clapton or Blackmore you are not in your right mind.

not so much as tolkki ove clapton, im saying tolkki over petrucci, he is over rated (i have seen him live so dont start) dont get me wrong, he is very good but i was not impressed when i heard him, i was impressed with tolkki (heard dt before strato by the way)
hell when i saw him live at the Dream Theater and Yes! concert, the Yes! guitarist totally blew him away, and my dt diehard friends agreed

Well... It's hard, at least for me. I mean.. Petrucci is fucking awesome. That man is a monster of the guitar. He combines so many things into guitar playing that it gets scary.

But Timo Tolkki.. I don't know.. I love his playing so much, for some odd reason.. he puts a lot of feeling in it.

I don't like comparing guitarists much. It's like saying Rusty Cooley is one of the best in the world. The man sucks ass, at least the way I see it. He's just a brilliant sweep picker, the best there is. :)

Both Tolkki and Petrucci are complete guitarists.. although I think Tolkki plays with a lot more power. My opinion.

True: Becker Clapton and Blackmore are originals.

Petrucci is just a horrible hack!! Maybe he sorta plays fast but his tone is awful. And what he plays is usually rubbish. Dream Theater is a good band, don't get me wrong. But Pertrucci sucks shit.

I agree to that but this list is not about emotions and feelings but about what is comparable, i.e. technical skills. And on this criteria, there's absolutely NO WAY TT overs JP.

Yes, for sure :)

But then, David Murray should also be on higher levels.. eh, it's a matter of opinions, really.

I KNEW...that one DT fan would come and defend the DTguys!!! :D
i couldnt resist man, sorry!

Anyway...JP rules. Malmsteen had his days till 98, but JP still working with quality and a amazing tech/creativity, so, he is the best guitar player nowadays.

Sure that Romeo is great but...hmm...neoclassical is overrated? yea...blackmore>malmsteen>1824328936 guitarrists(including romeo) so...its cool, but i mean, if you mix JAZZ, BLUES on it its much more intersting, im not a DT fan, they have awesome compositions, but when the song is in the climax...its so fucking cool...comes that NOISESUPERULTRATECHNICALSTUFFSOPROGRESSIVE and in my opinion, sucks a lot.

Maiden guys should be listed on top10, they're the beginning.

Jens, of course, should be listed on top5, since malmsteen i love his work, its damn great stuff even his solo carreer.

just my 2 cents.

Including Tolkki as well... Anyway I don't defend JP because I'm a DT fan. I'm a Stratovarius fan as well and it doesn't stop me from saying TT is petty average and Jörg is WAY overrated.

btw, i was joking  i forget to mention in my last message. :(

Yeah, i can agree with you about TT, but he have more feeling than Romeo and the others, its not only technical masturbation as romeo for example.

About drummers, I dont think Jörg overrated, i think that he is great, i really enjoyed his work on Saxon and in Stratovarius, this last one more simple, the problem is, the drum of melodic metal is just one, double bass and the same thing always. Its repetitive, as Maiden drums.

I much prefer McBrain's drumming that Jörg's, in the two last Maiden albums espeially. But I agree, if you want great drumming, metal is definitely not the right place to search. Just check the Top 100 Most Sklled Drummers, there isn't any metal ones except Portnoy and some others.

I'm not a drummer, but I do believe Maiden's drumming (both Clive's and Nicko's) isn't *that* simple.

I may be wrong! :D

In any case,

Yeah. Nor is regular Rock. But when you get to progressive stuff, and jazz.. you have awesome things that leave you drooling. :D

yeah i agree with the statement of metal drummers not being at their full potential, in metal and rock drummers keep the speed and rythm but they dont really get a chance to lead the melody (or tempo, im not sure...) as in progressive, jazz or techno (look at safri duo)

@ MafiaBoy: JP is very good technical guitarrist but he lacks emotion and power, the best dream theater songs (for me at least) dont really show petrucci much, i dont think progressive is the right field for excellent guitarists, i like much more the speed and melody of power metal (from slow, mid and fast tempost)

just my 2 cents, didn't mean to offend anyone by this

Clapton, why is this guy always near the top. He is total cheese and i hate him with his so boring boxed in blues bollocks.
How can an idiot like this who has lived off those 2 Cream songs be mentioned in the same breath as Jimi Hendrix, gotta be the most over-rated guitarist ever and i HATE HIM.

About TT having emotions and JP not, that's funny, I saw exactly the opposite on DT forum :D Like "Tolkki is the ultimate 'all speed, no style'' player".

About Clapton I have to disagree, I like him much much much more than Hendrix.

Funny that this was already written, bUt I agree.
Eric Clapton is completely disabled when it comes to guitar, he can't play that thing worth shit! I mean rank him above Malmsteen? Above Petrucci? Above Fripp, Romeo? Ok, maybe Tolkki isn't quite* as good as him yet, but the others definitely are.

But seriously, what pompous asshole wrote this best 100 thing? Since when is his opinion more valued than ours? What makes him the supreme authority on who's better than who? I mean I can understand a page on who he thinks is the greatest guitarist or something, but its just like flat out: we know this is their relative worth...I mean I don't want to sound obnoxious or anything but why are we paying attention to what this publication says?

I mean in music, its all about exposure. Thats how HENDRIX became such a legend. I like Hendrix. Is he even among the best? No! Eric Clapton is relatively horrible in my opinion. Slash is not better than Petrucci! Its not fair to judge who is the best, because I'm willing to bet that not everyone knows about Tolkki/Petrucci/Malmsteen/Romeo, or at least knows them and has heard them well enough to judge them.

I mean think about it, whatever group of people wrote that up: I highly doubt that they have individually taken equal portions of time to listen to perhaps 800+ different musicians. If you say they have, I am not buying it. You can't fairly listen to 800+ musicians and rank them in order. Thats ridiculous. A group of people wrote that up. And not everyone of those guys has heard of malmsteen, thats for sure. But they sure as hell have all listened to Slash, they've all listened to Angus Young, they've all listened to their Claptons and their Hendrix's.

What I'm trying to get across here is, and this means perhaps I've contradicted myself in this post, whoever wrote this list is in no position to lay down his opinions on such ambiguous subject matter as facts and we shouldn't take them seriously.

of course it is an opinion, i mean how do you rate a guitar player overall, technique, speed, difficulty, tricks, feeling, sucess...? because you just cant say this guitarrist is the best and the hell with the others
