I picked up my bass guitar again! I started playing it a year or so back....but only played for two weeks, so i can't play anything except a tiny piece from Rage Against The Machine's 'Bombtrack' .....i attempted playing Iron Savior's 'Never Say Die' but didn't get too far

Soon you will realise that the bass is the path of righetousness. It is by far the superior instrument in any band. Especially metal.

I won't say "especially in metal", but the superior instrument, definitely !NeonVomit wrote:Soon you will realise that the bass is the path of righetousness. It is by far the superior instrument in any band. Especially metal.

Try listening to metal being played without a bass player.
Trust me, bass gives the heaviness to metal.

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
I dont think like that. I think that the guitar is what gives the heaviness, bass is great for "armonizing" songsNeonVomit wrote:Try listening to metal being played without a bass player.

Bass is esencial in funk

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
But no bass = no low end. No low end = no heaviness. Unless you boost the lows on your guitar amps, with a result of losing all sense of definition in playing.Aresius wrote:I dont think like that. Bass is essential for any music, period.

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
Of course it is...but i think that we missed something, the MAIN instrument on metal is the guitar...not the bass, in Funk, yes...bass is the MAIN instrument.

Bass is essential. In almost everything, it's the powerhouse even in symphony orchestra, look and feel the row of bass violins! The real low end can't of course even be heard on cheap stereos, walkman earplugs or computer speakers so if someone gets used to music without low end, I guess they can live with it then. Personally I can't enjoy music I can't feel from the low end.
Personally I think it's the crunchy tone of guitar that makes heaviness, bass just makes it sound full! And bass with treble knob high and overdrive... That sounds like shit, I prefer no bass over noise bass, keep it LOW, please!

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
You should hear the sort of sound I get when I play my Washburn through my Ashdown EB-180 with a SansAmp and Big Muff distortion pedal. Absolutely sick, fuzzy, and TONS of low end. Very different to the tone I get from my Gallien-Krueger head into Ashdown ABM cabinet with my Ibanez bass. That's the total opposite, crisp, clean and tight.Jaakko wrote:Bass is essential. Pretty silly discussion, bass is as essential in metal as drums are. Just not as obvious. Essential in all music.

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
Just that the low frequencies you get off guitar are harmonies and overtones without the actual bass note pitch that bass guitar can produce. So it's muddy and not very articulated if you go with guitars. Unless you tune down quite a bit

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
Yes. I also think that the first thing in metal we hear is the guitar.Aresius wrote:I think that the guitar is what gives the heaviness, bass is great for "armonizing" songs
After, all the instruments are important for the structure of a song.
Chant, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Keyboards. Of course, the keyboards are not used by all the bands, but it can add some great melodies in some styles of metal.
Duets of guitar and keyboards are amazing.

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
The duets may be amazing, but then again the duels are also quite impressive... stratofortress is a good example of that

The Drums are the heart and soul of a band.

Do a search and find some stuff. No guitars or drums. Only bass.
Very experimental doom-metal.

A drummer

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
Bass is a Cool instrument. I enjoy bass as much as regular guitar. I played bass in a church band a few months a couple years back. nothing to brag about but I enjoyed the experience very much.
I try to practice a few times a week to keep my technique fresh and alive.

Oh well. Bass simply speaks to my soul like no other instrument. That's just me though.

Heard Backstage: Will the musicans and the drummer come to the stage....
Anyway... The bass makes metal more clean... without it everything becomes a bit ... what's the word... pointy?

Re: I touched it again yesterday...
You know what is the most awesome thing about the bass?
Bass Solos. Long, intricate ones too. Metal needs more of that in my opinion. Cause most bands tend to treat it as a forgettable "rhythm section", it can be more than that.
