Bush has nominated Samuel Alito to the vacant Justice seat.
Described as being religiously ultra-conservative, Alito is Anti-abortion, anti-affirmative action, anti-equal rights, pro-gun&pro-traditional family.
Alito won Kudos/high-fives from extreme rightwingers like Pat Robertson&others, but severe criticism from "soft" Republicans, and most Democrats in the Congress. Who have said if Alito is chosen as the Justice, this man's policies/votes on issues would surely divide the Nation even more serverely along party lines brcause of his Hardline right-wing views&beliefs.
The policies&ultimately, America itself would take a giant Step--if not, Leap--backward not only politically, but socially as well!

This is pretty funny. It was actually the "Southern Democrats" that started the KKK. The KKK was created by Southern Democrats after the civil war in order to keep the Republicans and Blacks out of their local government, they used terrorist tactics against BOTH blacks and white Republicans.Neorave wrote:Remind me what year this is, asshole. Great, not only are we gonna have Christian methodist crazy peoples, but it sounds like the Ku Klux Klan may be resurrected as well (with Alito as the leader).Samuel A. Alito, disagreed, writing that the hotel had merely committed "minor inconsistencies" in its rules for filling jobs and that it would be wrong to allow "disgruntled employees to impose the costs of trial on employers who, although they have not acted with the intent to discriminate, may have treated their employees unfairly."
The Blacks in America voted predominately Republican up until the creation of the welfare state by FDR. Amazingly the black population was only 10% at the time but 18% were welfare "new deal" recipients. This change in voter demographic proved to be very advantageous to the Democratic party.
As for true racism, yes it exists on BOTH sides. Don't let those champagne socialist Dems fool ya! Yeah Ted Kennedy sure wouldn't send his kids to the school they were SUPPOSE to go to........uh huh.....wha? wha? Too many blacks in that inner-city school? Yes and just about all the inner-city governments are run by the Dems, we see what condition they are in now don't we? Yes keep them down and out, and give them BARELY enough to live on, keep them poor and in subjection.

I think you are really "reaching" here with the Roe vs Wade. And even if it was overturned that would NOT criminalize abortion. The case should have never even been decided the way it was in the first place. What? Don't you think that fathers have a say in the matter at all??? If I am not mistaken Alito's views are NOT necessarily to completely outlaw abortion, only to give the husband more rights. This would not affect single women, nor would it criminalize abortion.NordicStorm wrote:You can kiss Roe v. Wade goodbye if this guy is confirmed. And when Roe v. Wade is overturned, every state is free to criminalize abortion, if they so chose (the likelihood being quite a few of them will). Which would kinda' suck if you needed an abortion and you'd have to travel five states over to get one.
He would probably also be a vote in favour of continuing torture and abuse of prisoners-of-war - in whatever relevant cases may be heard before the Supreme Court - that Cheney and his ilk are backing, Geneva convention be damned. The sad part being that this nominee is a step up from his last nominee, Bush's cleaning lady.
Of course, given Bush's harsh decline in popularity recently and given that a majority of Americans actually are pro-choice, at least to a certain extent, you would think the opposition party wouldn't have much trouble derailing this appointment. Unfortunately, the opposition party is the Democratic party.
And before someone starts yapping about how bad abortion is...yeah, I agree. I'm essentially pro-life. But things aren't black and white. There are circumstances when you don't have much of a choice.
I would love to hear you elaborate on this part: "He would probably also be a vote in favour of continuing torture and abuse of prisoners-of-war - in whatever relevant cases may be heard before the Supreme Court"

Thomas Jefferson was in NO WAY an atheist. And to another post he wasn't a Deist either.NeonVomit wrote:One thing they forget all the time. America is MEANT to be a free country. So, if someone is Jewish (who don't seem to have any qualms about abortion, correct me if I'm wrong) or someone is indeed atheist, then they won't care what God thinks about abortion, because they don't even believe there IS a god!
America is not a Christian country. It's a country where one is allowed to believe whatever one chooses. That is exactly what the founding fathers intended, was it not? And no, the founding fathers were not extreme Christians. Thomas Jefferson for example was a vocal atheist. The 'In God We Trust' bit of the Constitution was I believe added during the 1950's at the hight of McCarthyism.
Yes, I am a Christian. I believe in God.
I however also believe in free will, and the right for anyone to choose what to do in their life. The state and government imposing beliefs on people who exercise their right to not believe is simply wrong and against the whole American idea.
I see its time for some history lessons.
This nation was founded on religious freedom you say? Not so! It indeed was formed on protestant chrisianity. But as for freedom, nope, it didn't exactly turn out that way. The Puritans came here for religious freedom from England as long as everyone "practiced" their religion of Puritanism. The first woman to ever be put to death on American soil was a "Christian Quaker", because of her beliefs. A few dozen others were put to death for practicing "other" forms of religions or for not "practicing" any religion. You see it was a law in Massachusetts that you had to attend the Puritan church or else you were tortured and banished. Rhode Island was actully one of the most diverse for religous freedom. Roger Williams, a Puritan Pastor defected from the Puritans and took up the cause of the Quakers. He became the govenor of Rhode Island and the next 36 govenors were also Christian Quakers. Later William Penn's Quaker roots brought more religious freedom, and the ONLY treaty with the Indains that was NEVER broken.
During the trial of Margaret Matson Penn asked, "Art thou a witch?" and "Hast thou ridden through the air on a broomstick?" When she answered yes, he said that she had a right to ride on a broomstick, that he knew no law against it, and thereupon ordered her discharge.
Maryland's Quakers and Dutch residents were the first in American history to ever petition a govenor for religious freedom, and they won!
Abe Lincoln, Daniel Boone, the man that founded the smallpox vaccine (on the Quaker oat box), and many other famous Americans were Quakers. They fought for religious freedom, Indian rights, They WERE the abolitionists for Slavery, fought for the Union, and they fought for Women's sufferage and better conditions in prisons! I am quite familar with the Quakers, almost all of my father's maternal line relatives were Quakers, one of which was the 18th govenor of Kansas.

I saw a program on The History Channel a few years ago that dealt with this subject&as a Democrat I was quite shocked! I mean, back then the Republicans were sympathic to racialissues, and Dems were the rascists!

So I guess the 'Land of the Free' part of the national anthem should be re-written 'Land of the Free, as long as you're a Christian, if not, too bad'
The irony of the whole thing makes me dizzy. America was founded by those who had rejected Europe due to oppression. It was meant to be a tolerant society.
Now, Europe is the tolerant society and America is becoming the oppressive one.
Whatever, I'm just glad I'm living here.

But here is a thought, considering the fact that the Judge in Alabama can't display his beliefs in public (real freedom of thought and religion there huh), the libs squaked the right to pray OUT of schools, and they are now outlawing Christmas trees in government offices in my home town, they have and are still trying to make a law against the display of nativity scenes outside at Christmas time in New York, and they just ruled in Tennessee that no one could have license plates that say "pro life" on them.....I would say you ARE 100% CORRECT! Leave it to the Libs and we soon will have no individual rights whatsoever.
And what about that deal with the ACLU trying to take the cross off the seal in Los Angeles which would cost millions of tax payer dollars. A seal that has been used for many years, which also has symbols of a pagan goddess, and other religious symbols on it. Fortunately they didn't win this one though.
Here is a picture of the seal they were trying to re-do, see how small that cross is compared to the BIG pagan goddess in the middle?

Funny, they haven't tried to outlaw any Menorahs or Cresent images, no pagan images...

And SPEAKING of prayer in school, here is a nice one, take a look
JUDICIAL JIHAD
Judge rules Islamic education
OK in California classrooms
Dismisses suit opposing requirement students recite Quran, pray to Allah

Oh My....so you can force non muslims children to dress up and pray to Allah at school but Christians can't WILLINGLY pray to God, nor can children read the Bible at school. Nice.

@browneyedgirl, I think the Republicans have always been pretty fair to racial issues and causes.
Here is an interesting article about it, oh and a black man wrote it.

Blacks might be surprised to compare Republican history with the Democrats’.

Plus just look at our current Administration, Condi Rice, Colin Powell, and now Alito.

Re: The US Supreme Court May Take a Giant Step Backward :(
One thing I hear a lot of, even in some history books that is COMPLETELY false. They like to think that somehow the Democrat and Republican party have traded places down the years and the ideologies have actually switched. They point out that Thomas Jefferson was the first Democrat, even the Dems like to tell it this way. Oh contrier! Thomas Jeffereson was a Democratic Republican and his ideologies match right up with Republicans today "less government control" and a very "strict interpretaion of the constitution". Later down the road the party became the Whigs (and so did some Democrats) and eventually the Republican party with Abe Lincoln. As a matter of fact Jefferson was one of the earliest to believe that slavery should be abolished.
They don't call it the "GRAND OLD PARTY" for nothing.

is this person a history teacher? I feel like I'm in High school again.
and I hated history. but, what BEG said was true because I remember that show. we used to alternate shows when we had our Directtv system thing instead of fighting over what to watch, and I remember that program because mama kept saying,"I didn't know that!I did not know that!"
she loved that damn channel. It and TLC and Discovery.

Nope not a history teacher, yet.
Although BEG and I are polar opposites on politics, I believe we are very civilized when discussing it.
