it's a mixture of the words Stratocaster and Stradivarius, you can read that also here:

I think it's quite a fitting name, since they're best known for combining metal with classical music elements.

I saw written some where that "stratovarius" was Chinese for "above the heavens", but, that does not have anything to do with why the band is named that.
I wish I could've written down that link. :(

Is that true? I never heard that before, but it's really very cute meaning. :)

I heard that in Tamashek (the language of the Tuareg) "Stratovarius" means "the gardener who pisses on his plants".

well, it's not the word "stratovarius" means "above the heavens" in chinese, it's because somehow it has been tranlated to chinese in that way. you cannot expect all our chinese ppl to remember such a long word and its pronunciation, right?
therefore we should have a chinese name for this band, and some guy picked up these two chinese characters, which have this "above heaven" meaning. (actually, the direct translation should be "above the clouds") I guess that's because the "strato-" thing means something high above...or maybe they use this to discribe Kotipelto's voice? that's what in my mind~
if you want i can post these chinese characters in GIF picture or something. ^_^

Thats very interesting! Yes, "strato" is a prefix for a type of cloud, so I guess "above the clouds" is better translation. But, I still wish I'd saved that link to that site which stated what I did before. :D

The gardener who pisses on his plants? JENS!!!!!!

That would be an explanation for Jens joining Stratovarius. :D

Or the decision they wanted to continue their career under this Lassila-made name when Jens & Jörg joined. :P

It's here where i want to say something really cheesy and after-school-special-ish like "...Stratovarius means whatever you want it to mean." followed with some trite, inspirational words.

why am i still not going to bed?
