And the sea life gets tangled up in all that mess. There was a picture once I saw of a baby dolphin which got tangled up in one of those plastic cola 6-pack holders. And the plastic started eating into the dolphins skin as the dolphin grew. It wasn't a pretty sight. :(
Also, the fish try to eat some of that garbage&well, it chokes them, and there is chemical-laden garbage, which harms the sea life.

And, guess what? This stuff gets into the food chain when the fish eat some of this garbage.

But, what can anyone do to stop it?

It doesn't have anything to do with heart so much as it does with common sense and responsibility.
This garbage in the sea has been building up for decades. Because of the worlds dependency on plastics(which do not break down, most are not biodegradeable), and peoples carelessness about dumping shit into the ocean the world collectively has created his mess. Of course, the article said all that.
And what can we do? The oceans ships could be policed, I guess, and if they are caught dumping stuff in the ocean slap a fine on them or worse. But, actually, nobody knows where alot of this garbage is coming from.
And, organizing a gigantic clean-up crew to clean up this area is, IMO, not realistic. It would be too little too late.
The only thing people of this world can do is to try, individually, not to let the problem get astoundingly worse than what it already is.

Part of the answer would be RR: Recycle&Reuse.
But, lets face it, plastic is here to stay.

It really sucks that the world is going to the dumps ... i really wish that there was some way shape or form that there was police services navigating the oceans but ... lots of the time trash is picked up in the currents and swept in different places ...

The plastic thing though .. there is a number system from 1 - 7 (incase you've looked at the bottom of Plastic bottle) normally in a little recycle triangle.
1 being easiest to break down
7 being the hardest.

All plastic has the ability to break down and biodegrate so to say .. but it takes an EXTREMELY long time to do so.

Kind of sucks.

Hopefully the world gets cleaner before it's too late.

It was more of wall-e as a solution to some of these humans. I hope at least that movie can help inspire some research into technology and medicine. There needs to be a short term advantage for all these short term thinkers to make any change. Of course with the money poured into killing each other this world could already have cost effective means of energy use and the solutions to many medical problems. Since they now have pilotless planes for people to kill each other from safety at the press of a button hopefully some of that can transfer into some civilian uses. The world could use a zeal for developing trash compacter technology and other ways to reuse material.
