Server move / potential outage

Post by JensJohansson » Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:19 pm

I just got a mail that this site will be moved from one server to another (it will still be on Dreamhost, but on another Dreamhost machine).

Old server was called 'link.dreamhost.com', presumable after the Zelda protagonist. So long, link!

Needless to say this means quite a few things could get hosed, it's not clear to me what I hard coded, what some setup scripts may have hard coded, etc.

So if there are problems the next few days there is nothing sinister going on, and I will fix it as soon as I have time.

If "link" or my home disk volume ".absented" is somehow referred to in some file, things will break, but I don't have time to check for that now. So I will simply wait for the switch and fix what breaks after that.

The good news is that dreamhost in their apology for the abruptness of this move, upgraded my account to "unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth".   :D :D :D

I can deal with fixing some broken config files in consideration of that

Anyway, carry on spamming!

Well, last year Webtv moved from one server to another, and I lost all my saved files. No way to get 'em back! But, I wasn't the only one. :( Hope this move doesn't get that extreme.

Is it a proxy server? If so, consider this-

To ensure a secure environment, you must set up the Local intranet zone in conjunction with your proxy servers and firewall. All sites in this zone should be inside the firewall, and the proxy servers should be configured so that an external Domain Name System (DNS) name cannot be resolved to this zone. By default, the Local intranet zone consists of local domain names and any domains that are specified to bypass the proxy server. You should verify that these settings are secure for your organization, and modify the settings as necessary. When you set up the zone, you can specify the URL categories as well as specific sites in the zone. To set up sites in the Local intranet zone, access the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and click the Security tab. Click the Local intranet zone, click Sites, and select the applicable check boxes.

I know this is not an intranet environment, but it's some tips if you want to build a local network plan.

Move went well, there were/are a few small things but nothing you guys would notice.

Hello slippy.dreamhost.com, goodbye link.dreamhost.com.

Biggest annoyance: server runs 64 bit software so I had to recompile my "favorite" text editor. :)

Storage space here is now unlimited, not 600 GB anymore.

More band news soon!
