Songs of stratovarius with band mates cooperation...

Post by lalodrums2 » Sat Mar 21, 2009 8:19 pm

There are songs in which other members were involved too (sadly, just a few, beside of TT doing all the composing), I wish they would had more opportunities to do that, anyway, here are some of them...

I think band mates contributions are essential in every band (I'm glad to know that he is now doing that with RR)... What do you think? (by the way, I wonder how they're composing the new songs?, I mean who's participating in the process?)

There are more, but here we have some of them...

Cheers and have a great day! :)

I agree with you. I think if a Band just consists of one guy writing songs and composing them and 3 or 4 other guys playing this music isn't really a band. Band means to me that every member can contribute to the music.

And I think Jens wrote somewhere in the forum that if someone comes up with a song he is the "master" of it.

I think a band can definitely have just one main songwriter. It is as band as any other band. I think it is foolish to say it wouldn't be :) Anyone who is a bit into making music knows what I'm saying. There is a thing called arranging too. A main songwriter makes the actual song and players can add things on top of it. That's how it goes. Often it has to go like this because the songwriter has to be a hell of a visionary to write everything.

As Jens said once that for a record he played many different kind of keyboard tracks and they then went through the GME (General Mute Effect :D ) of Karmila and Tolkki.

There is a proverb in Finnish which has a good point. Often if for example a song is produced by many people it can become "unsolid" and can result in a not as good song as it would have been if written just by one person (or for two for instance).

I practically run my band and I consider it my band and a result/concretion of my vision. I write the songs too. However I tell everyone to come up with own ideas to support my composition.
The main point is that the songs are good and nice to play.

AND yes, everyone can contribute in the music already by PLAYING it :)

Kotipelto also wrote "Dream With Me" which is one of my favorite Stratovarius songs. Also, "What Can I Say?"& "Its a Mystery".
I think those three were on the INTERMISSION album. ???

Mmmh... Well I think you are right but there's a big difference between "Hey mate, listen up to this... Now I want you to play it like this (with this tempo, with this structure, with all this things previously settled by me (I think yngwie always do this, that's why it's NOT a band, is more like "yngwie and mates" every time changing his line up, etc. ...") and between "Hey mate listen up to this, now play it with your own style, and I'm even able to modify it if it's necessary" and why not? let's share the credits, let's put someone else's names too :) "to have it like "this song" was a job group" (I mean maybe not always, but sometimes it feels cool I think) :)
"AND yes, everyone can contribute in the music already by PLAYING it"
I think that's not a REAL "contribution", because If somebody gives you "EXACTLY" (instead of just the idea or the direction) the way that the song should be, well I don't know, then I think the band mate could be whoever (doesn't really matter right? you just need a musician with skills) for me a band doesn't work in a "one way street, my way or the highway" like "OK boss anything you say, we will always obey". Do you know what I mean?

I like very much when I see in some bands that they are jaming and suddendly like "hey this sounds great let's work on this!" (as I wrote before maybe this doesn't have to be ALWAYS but it's cool)

That's what I think. :) Peace.

Have a nice day everyone! :)

Kotipelto is a good composer too!
I love those songs, I have the Intermission album, is one of my faves!
& I think he wrote the bests songs together with Tolkki: Galaxies, We hold the key, Paradise, Black diamond, Hunting high & low, etc.....
Don't understand why in the lasts albuns they don't composed together anymore!

Because they never composed together. Tolkki composed and Kotipelto did the lyrics.

Yeah I understand your point. But it is very often so that most of the players are nor composers or good at it :) What you're saying is kind of saying that for example cover bands are not bands. But let's not take that into account 'cause I know that's not what you meant :D I'm just saying that sometimes the best result is reached when there is only one main composer. Sometimes it works if the band has an enough good internal spirit and relations.

But I know from my own experience that I have a somewhat strong vision of my songs. Players give their on thing for the songs. If my vision differs a lot from the visions of my bandmates I won't take their ideas into my songs.

It's a complex thing. And composing together doesn't fit everyone. It fits me though but I need a deeper connection with the one I'm composing with. Otherwise it doesn't work :)

So the most important for a song is just the melody? The instrumental part?
The guy who is consider the composer is the one who just composed the instrumental parts?
For me both things are very important, the melody & the lyrics!

I never said that. I just corrected your statement that Kotipelto and Tolkki composed together. And yes, the guys who is the composer is the person that composes the song, not the one who writes the lyrics. I never said that composing is more important than songwritting.

In the list above they appear as composer of many songs together, like for example:

Against The Wind

[Words & Music by Tolkki/Kotipelto]

Galaxies

[Words & Music by Tolkki/Kotipelto]

In my booklet Cd also appears like that!

There were 3 song. All from the Fourth Dimension album. Okay, maybe I was wrong about that but that still isn't much.

A good thing about RR is that most (or all... :? ) members are taking part in the writing/composing process, I think. The song 'Behind the Mask' especially, doesn't sound like it was by Tolkki at all IMO :o

It wasn't written by him. It was written by Gus and Bruno for an old project. They actually had the original version of that song on their Myspace page.

The songwriting and composing is just different now in both bands. It's now a more democratic process where all the members contribute something where as before Tolkki would steer the ship as far as composing went.

Also you hav to think to yoursef, Tolkki is just naturally talented when it comes to composing. I'm a guitarist, and i'm not bad. I come up with a riff or solo i write it down. In 30 minutes i have like 2 full songs. Which may explain why Tolkki has so much musical contribution. He loves doing it so he does it alot.

In my opinion there are 3 songs that really sounds like Stratovarius, that could be on the Elements albuns!
