I've got to agree. I think power metal in special has been going through some trouble in the past 3 or 5 years, I hope this trend is reversed this year with a great release by Stratovarius. Stratovarius did reinvent the genre once, they could as well save it now again...

I'm not saying Unia for example is a bad album. It's just not what Sonata used to do. Same about Tinnitus Sanctus.

I love change, but the recent changes were kind of scary.

But let's be honest here: We're talking about Power Metal. What more can you do in this genre? It is pretty hard to keep a qood level of quality without getting repetitive.

The same can be said about all genres. Like Jens says, all western music is based on the same 12 notes. Sounding fresh after years on the road is a challange and it does take experimentation, but there's a balance that must be accounted for.

That's also a very good point. How often have you heard people saying that Ecliptica, Silence and Winterheart's Guild all sound the same? To me they're clearly different in many aspects, especially WG when compared to the other two.

One band that I really love is Mob Rules (it's actually in my personal top 5 nowadays). They were pretty consistent throughout 5 albums (for some reason I think that Ethnolution A. D. even threw in some more variation than usual) and all of them are 5 out of 5 stars for me. HammerFall is also pretty damn consistent between albums, and they're doing great both popularity-wise and musically-wise.

Maybe people are too used to the huge variety present in mainstream music, mainly because there are always new genres being created and dying a quick death, being forgotten by the media and people who once liked to listen to them.

I have to agree with ragehead on this one, I think it's more about personal taste cause many of the reasons people describe as why the power metal movement is going stale are the reasons I think it's constantly getting better, personally I like it when a band tries new things, that's something I've been liking since Judas priest
