just to increase the amount of opinions...

and being a proud owner of Polaris
my opinion
compared to previous, this CD has several new good aspects. First of all, I hear Jörg's drumming new, yes, the drums have been spoken to me. They sound so right. They are everywhere - except the folk song-like last piece.
Secondly, my hearing is not sofisticated enough to hear all bass playing (except listening in my vehicle, where the car resonance itself helps  ). I am happy to hear Lauri as a composer now - also in Strato. It sounds beautiful and TK's vocals sound exceptionally soft in this enviroment - I like it.
The amount of keyboards at this point is right now, it just is. It would have been a waste if composes of Jens had not been heard in Strato CD.
Matias and TK, you seem to work so well together, splendid union.
And at last, I have been listening Polaris for one week now and it sounds better every day. Is that a good piece of art or not?!
Those of you who still wait for your CD - it is well worth waiting...

Well, I have one question.. If you´re listening to "Blind" there is some king of percussive sound after the firt chorus (well I guess it´s there, can´t check it by now, sorry). Is that that cowbell featured in Lauri´s clip? I´m not the drummer, but It sounds awesome in that song!
:D

Thanks!

I listen to it all the time, which is a good sign. :-) It's a great album with fresh energy, like a young band at the start of the career, yet it's definately Stratovarius. The best version of Stratovarius so far IMO. Not because Tolkki is out of the band, he's a great composer/guitarist, but because it's a collaboration of different great musicians with different songwriting ideas, which makes the songs more diverse, interesting and surprising.

Ah BTW, I've bought the Limited Edition with the 7" Vinyl, and recommend everyone to get this version, since Second Sight is a very good song. Yay!

Anyways, here's the review I did for my local paper. It's not as indepth or descriptive as I'd like, but it's a Newspaper, and I had already went over the 350 word limit.

---------------------------------

3/5

2009 marks an important shift in the legacy of former power metal giant, Stratovarius. Gone is their 23 year driving force, Timo Tolkki, who not only raised the band from the grave in the mid-80s, but also composed most of the Stratovarius music fans of the genre and band hold dear. Taking his place is rising guitar virtuoso Matias Kupiainen, a nerd ball youngling who physically matches the metal genre about as well as Tolkki would match the cover of Playboy. Despite this, however, Kupiainen makes a decent, if underutilized, replacement who has far less guitar solos than he should.

The reins of composition are fairly distributed to most of the band, with every one of them, excluding the drummer, being credited in at least three songs. And this is where Polaris falters. The range of quality is off the charts. While Matias Kupiainen and vocalist Timo Kotipelto are not credited in a single song of poor quality (Deep Unknown, Higher We Go, Somehow Precious), Jens Johansson is the composer for the three worst songs of the album (King of Nothing, Winter Skies, Blind). But this really has nothing to do with the instrumental composition, which is fairly decent. Instead, it has to do with the vocal composition, which is about as memorable as Saana: Warrior of Light. Remember that? Neither do we.

Bassist Lauri Porra surprisingly creates some decent tunes that, while wholly unoriginal, feel the most Tolkki-like. Songs such as “Falling Star” feels ripped straight out of Fourth Dimension, while “Emancipation Suite Part I” could have made a fine placement in the dud sequel, Elements Pt. 2. While that’s not the biggest praise, it is a pleasant surprise that gives a feeling of hope for a band that doesn’t seem to know what musical direction it wants to take. Songs such as the excellent “Deep Unknown”, suggests they want to delve into prog metal, where as “Forever is Today” and “Higher We Go” propose they wish to stick with the past. The result is a respectable yet awkward mix of new school and old school with quality pointing in as many ways as their musical direction. Welcome back?

Editor’s Picks:

1. Deep Unknown
2. Forever is Today
3. Higher We Go
4. Emancipation Suite Pt. 1

I'd like to start off by saying once again that this isn't an attack.

But seriously that has to be one of the most bias reviews I have ever read, credit is given nowhere, Matias is called a nerd and Jens is said to write the worst material ever.

It seriously sounds like it's coming from someone who's never liked the band in the first place. The idea of reviewing something means you review it objectively and make valid points as to why you liked or didn't like it. All that seemed to be going on here was a bonified "I don't like the new Strato" hate fest.
Now I could be wrong here and if I am I apoligize in advance, this is merely my critique of this whole thing.

I agree with Hiro.
The fans are allowed to be glowing, if we like what we hear. Then we are happy.
I never value people who are in a position to write to newspaper and want to show their competent by being censorious. Criticism doesn't need to be offensive, then it just tells about the writer.

I said Jens wrote the worst material on the album, not the worst material in the existence of mmusic. And a 3/5 isn't "hating the new Strato", especially considering "Deep Unknown", the most modern sounding song on the album, is my favorite song. If you didn't realize, a 3/5 isn't a bad score.

And calling Matias a nerd is purely based on his looks, as is meant by the comment right afterwards, and is meant to be a joke.

And how is credit given nowhere? I say specifically that Kotipelto/Kupiainen right decent songs, as does Lauri Porra. And that Kupiainen makes a decent fit, but is underused. I didn't feel the need to mention Johansson or Kotipelto's performances because, well, it's hard to praise something that has already been praised a thousand times before. Need I remind you, I only had a 350 word limit, and I already went over.

And don't expect everybody to love the new album. You can't love everything. I've been a fan of Stratovarius since Dreamspace when I first heard it when I was around 6 or 7. Just because I wasn't the biggest fan of the album doesn't make my review "bias." It's more levelheaded than screaming "OMG BEST ALBUM EVAR!!" and marking no criticisms, or saying "WORST ALBUM EVAR, TEH NO TIMO TOLKKI!!!".

To me, your post is bias, not my review. Jeeze, it's sad that the most criticized reviews are the ones that are in between "OMG AMAZING" and "OMG SHIT."

so are you saying that you scored it low because not everyone will like it? :?

well he does use the word quality without any context of what he means by it other from rating songs as low quality because he can't remember a chorus.

I am blind
But I can see you
In my mind
I am blind
But I can see you
I am blind

That is much simpler than a children’s nursery rhyme so I am not sure why he can't remember it.

First off, remember I did state that it was not an attack, quit treating it as such.
I was not accusing anyone of anything, I was merely stating that the review came off that way even if it wasn't intentional.

I just have to say I got to listen to the whole album all the way through and it's really really good. Big kudos to you guys.

The album has a well executed theme of space and the title polaris is so fitting. I had no doubt in Jens' song writing ablities, but as a first from some of the other guys in the new strato, they did a pretty damn good job of filling TT's shoes. The album is very positive and emulates strato's message. Although the lyrics are a bit less spiritual than before, I feel the music has taken a giant leap in improvement from E part 2. The album is beautiful in the sense that it shows great diversity and expression from numeorus musically brilliant and talented minds. It's a real treat to see how others would interpret stratovarius' music.

Highlights for me include, Deep Unknown's chorus and solo, Blind in it's entrity (I feel the lyrics in this song projects that old strato message the best; I really like the lyrics), Higher we go's solo is amazing (can't wait to see that live), and I really like Forever is Today although it kinda sounds like a Warmen song (I love warmen btw). Overall it's a great album for me and I have faith that the next record will be even better!

I find that it's a logical evolution of what has been going on. I know there are those who hate the Self titled album however I thought it was a good step in a new direction, I believe Polaris builds upon that in a very positive way.

Kind of like Age of Aquarius was the logical evolution of Tolkki's music. You can tell with the Self titled album that Tolkki and the others are moving in different directions, hence why the songs have a sort of "strange" direction to them. I don't mean strange in a bad way, just very different from what we were used to before.
You can tell that the others are wanting to go one direction while Tolkki wants to go another, so with Age of Aquarius Tolkki went in the direction he wanted to go and with Polaris the others went the direction they wanted to go.

in the end we all ended up with great albums from two different but great bands, I also have high hopes for the ProjectStrato CD

Songs are rated from 4- (the worst) to 10 (the best).

Introduction

Image

A month ago or so ago, Stratovarius announced their new album with our new guitarist. At first, I was skeptical upon hearing the demos that were posted by Jens. Even if I had this feeling, I went and pre-ordered the Japanese edition on my usual Japanese CD order website. Upon receiving it today (May 27 2009), I was greatly surprised : even the slowest song attracted me. Something rare because I usually attracted by fast music à la "Through The Fire And The Flame" by Dragonforce and the music style Eurobeat (derived from Italo-Disco, produced in Italy, sold in Japan : Fast music from 135BPM to 170BPM). So Here we go with the in-depth review. (P.S I'm not really good at criticism and sometimes I could sound bizarre or out of place and English is my second language)

In-dept review : song by song

1. Deep Unknown (4:28 )

The song starts with keyboard then we are washed by a speed stream of drum, bass and heavy guitar. Timo sounds awesome the second he start to sing. The melody is really impressive, fast and catchy. The guitar solo is totally impressive. The song totally represents the album. It's a really good song.

10/10

2. Falling Star (4:33)

When we say that the first impression is usually false, this song can be a good representative. We could think it's a very good speedy song but things get slower after the first guitar part. That could throw some people away. But not me. The song has everything on its side to be an awesome song. Great melody, guitar, bass, drum, keyboard and vocal works and has an awesome production. We see that Porra really did a great job in writing this. So, all in all, this song is totally mind blowing too. Great job!

10/10

3. King Of Nothing (6:42)

The song starts off with some marching effects and then some piano. Byafter, all the instruments adds up and offers a great combination of heavy and soft music while having a great production. But, I feel there is something missing in Timo's vocals in some part of the song... may be it's just me. Also, the keyboard/guitar solo's (what starts at 4:37) beginning sounded a little out of place. Even by-after. It feels like it would fit something faster. Anyway, it's not a bad song but it's not my favorite.

8¾/10

4. Second Sight (Japanese Bonus Track) (4:25)

The song starts really hard : direct to the punch. The Japanese are really lucky to have some kind of duplicate to Deep Unknown. Well, a duplicate, it's more like in the same style as Deep Unknown. The real highlight must be the chorus and the guitar solo which is super dreamy and awesome. In summary, the Japanese bonus is totally worth it. It's really good.

10/10

5. Blind (5:29)

At first sight, we could say that this song is ballad. False. It's yet another exciting song. The guitar riffs and the great vocals (although the chorus sounds off) could be the highlight. A very fast song, yet has a very great melody. I like it. I like the gentle ending.

9-/10

6. Winter Skies (5:50)

In the introduction, I said that habitually slow songs doesn't attract me. But, Winter Skies has such a great sooting melody that it's impossible to have a kick for this song. The highlight is, off course, the great melody and the vocals are totally perfect. Great production. I like it.

9+/10

7. Forever Is Today (4:41)

The song starts with a very fast guitar riff very well executed and very catchy. When the song finally take off, it's impossible to do not like it. I cannot tell how well this song hits jackpot. Everything works!! I cannot tell more than that. It's really good!

10/10

8. Higher We Go (3:48 )

One of the shortest song of the album. But it doesn't mean it isn't action packed! In fact, it's full of really good guitar and sooting melodies. The mix of ballad style song and metal in this song is just awesome. The quality can be seen during the couplet before the chorus and then the chorus. A very good production. I love this song.

10/10

9. Somehow Precious

If this album has a black cheep, this could be this song. Why? The couplet sounds off place. Just one or two strings of keyboard and vocals while the beginning was a slow-paced rock part. Then, all of a sudden, every comes back for the chorus. So? Some people could say it works, some would say it won't. I think it doesn't. I would have kept the guitar in someway and also kept the drum. However, the guiatr solo saves the day. Oh well, the song is still good but with no extra.

7+/10

10. Emancipation Suite : I Dusk (6:58 )

I think this song can easily be the masterpiece of the album due to its variety of melody and complexity. The song offers a lot of style : fast, slow and melodic. To me, it's great and all but after it's feeling old to me. Too bad, but still good.

8/10

11. Emancipation Suite : II Dawn (3:41)

The mix between the two parts is very executed congrats. The song is like the "day" side of the the first part since it's melodious and straightforward. Great melody and vocal work on this one. I totally like this one over the first part.

9/10

12. When Mountains Fall (3:03)

This is probably the strangest Stratovarius song I've ever heard. Only by the way it opens, we could think it's not Stratovarius at all. The song is a love song, one of the rare one in Strato's discography. One first hear, it should be disliked but after airplay, it's so fitting and good. Also, Timo reminds me of Koshi Inaba on this one (B'z singer, Japanese rock band - Wiki it (Btw, B'z is my favorite Rock band)). It's really impressive how this song was pulled off and it fits so much with the album in a strange way since it finishes the album. I love it.

10/10

Conclusion

All in all, it's a very good album. It proves that Stratovarius has survived the depart of Timo Tolkki and has proven that they can make some really great songs without him. Most of the album is the proof. The album itself possess a good variety of speedy and slow song. The most awkward but really fitting "When Mountains Fall" is maybe one of the surprising songs. "Deep Unknown" must be the best fast song of the album with "Higher We Go", "Second Sight (Japanese only)", "King of Nothing" and "Forever Is Today".

My top 3 :
Deep Unknown
Second Sight
Forever Is Today

My bottom 3 :
Somehow Precious
Emancipation Suite I : Dusk
??

3 Honorable Mentions :
The album art. Seriously. Best. Album. Art. EVER.
When Mountains Fall
King Of Nothing

Final grade : 9+/10

Hey all thought i'd come back and give my thoughts on Polaris. Haven't been on here for about 6 -7 months as Stratovarius and power metal in general just isn't my favourite type of music anymore, i'm more into the folk metal thing now. Anyways back to the album...
Only heard it the once so far but if all power metal albums were this good on first listen then I think I may just make power metal my favourite metal genre again! Loved it from start to finish. I thought it was so fresh and full of exciting different sounds, Jens with some classics and Jorg seems to have picked up a few new tricks. Just loving it, must go give it another listen now. :D
