So with factual evidence that the band did not have RJD in mind, you hold the band at fault for coming up with a common Italian name and word for “god” that happened to be the name that a singer took from a mobster, not as their full name, but as one piece in a full title?

We are saying that a Heavy Metal band decided to put Dio in their Bandname because they knew that they would get publicity because of it. I don't give a shit about the mobster and I don't give a shit about the Italian word for god. We're talking Heavy Metal. And you can't tell me that a Heavy Metal band choses the word "Dio" for their bandname withouit knowing about Ronnie James Dio and without thinking about the publicity they can get from that.

I listened to metal for years before I heard of RJD. You can't expect everyone to have instant knowledge or be a walking encyclopedia. I knew of rainbow for a while until I also learned that he had a solo band and played in black Sabbath. This knowledge does not come instant. A lot of bands I just know the names of the bands and have no clue that the members are.

You really think all people that play any subgenre of rock know about RJD? The band did not name itself "dio", they named the band "dio distraught overlord". It’s the same thing with rage against the machine and many other examples of one band taking a name that is a short common word and another band taking a name that is a longer title that uses the same common word.

I don't think so at all. I heard a lot of heavy metal before I heard of RJD. It was perhaps my 3rd year of listening to metal that I first heard of RJD. I heard of RJD before I heard of his solo band DIO. I heard of the Italian word for god, dio, way before I heard of RJD.

This band is not even playing something that is traditional heavy metal or any genre that RJD has performed

Granted, what they play ain't Metal like Dio plays it, but in the end of the day it is Heavy Metal. And again, a Heavy Metal band names itself Dio and doesn't know who Ronnie James Dio is and the adwantages that they'd get by using the name is. That sounds very, very unlikely to me.

I’m sure it got brought up by people afterwards. I don't think the band cares. It’s not going to make them get any more fans than they will get just from working to gain fans. At most a few more people will look at their videos because of RJD fan boys throwing fits but that will not turn those people into fans unless they like the music anyway. I can look at their name and not think of RJD at all since the band name is pretty much “god- distraught overlord” and their song content matches the theme of the name. not everyone associates dio with RJD since many people have had the name and it means god as well. If there was some solo artist named “Antonio Dio” I don’t think it should be such a problem for him to use his name and whatnot.
