From all indications this is not the swine flu.

Yes, this is from a conspiracy site, but there are many websites discussing this mystery disease which has killed alot of people the past few days.

It just seems strange to me. I an wondering if this really is some new illness or just some rumor gone wild. I am going to do some Googling later and see what I can find out.

My money's on poisoning. Contaminated water or food.

Nearly Half A Million Sick From Mystery Illness In Ukraine
http://digg.com/world_news/Nearly_Half_ ... In_Ukraine

Well, its not a rumor. The illness seems to be similar to Ebola but its concentrated in the respiratory system. At this point even the doctors do not know what they are dealing with! Its not known if its contagious, what its caused by(its a virus, but how is it transmitted), and why its there, in that area. And it affects all age groups.

:?
"In Ukraine over the past week about 1500 people have already died. As noted by some doctors, the reason - pneumonic plague. High temperatures from the first day, a burning sensation in the chest, the desire to drink cold and nausea - all of these symptoms are frightening. People die within few days."

"Odessa and the region is already infected, most likely, is mutated pneumonic plague , - said one of the doctors of private clinics in Odessa."

"I have met with friends from the western Ukraine, the doctors say that the lungs of the dead were black. And that, perhaps this is not influenza but pneumonic plague."
If that is true...poor people.

And now that I see references to the Spanish flu in that article, just for your information (not because I'm spanish) mainly because I think people should be correctly informed. "Spanish flu" have nothing to do with spaniards infecting the world or similar:
Although the first cases of the disease were registered in the continental U.S, and the rest of Europe long before getting to Spain, the 1918 Flu received its nickname "Spanish flu" because Spain, a neutral country in WWI, had no special censorship for news against the disease and its consequences. Hence the most reliable news on the disease came from Spain, giving the false impression that Spain was the most—if not the only—affected zone.

No information about this. Neither Ukrainian, nor Russian media. Where did you find this shit anyway? There are about 300,000 cases of A/H1N1/ flu in Ukraine but not some mysterious disease. If it was so, it would have been a big news at least here.

This is why I personally like Westerners. Here in Russia nobody would ever think that just if the flu is called "Spanish" that means that the spaniards have something to do with its epidemic spreading. Maybe that`s because people in the West think too much? :)

:) I don't know, maybe! I just know that there are a lot of westerners here in Spain (usually from Ukraine), and a lot of Swedish and Norwegians too

Its all over the internet, of course that does not mean much, I guess. :)
There have been reports that autopsies on a few of those who have died that revealed their lungs were filled with blood. Even if this is a result of swine flu complications, it sounds pretty bad!

I don't think this is true. My country is next to Ukraine, but I've never heard of this lol.

I'm not finding anything about this either (by which I mean not from a blog or some conspiracy website, an actual reliable source or first-hand information) I've spoken to friends of mine in Ukraine as well and they didn't know what I was talking about.

I think & I'm not the only one, that it's greatly exaggerated... Each year a lot of people die from flue, precisely because of complications, you know... :err:
sorry for my english)))

These conspiracy sites swear up and down all this is true, but late this afternoon one of them had an update which said 96 had died. Which is within normal range for a flu epidemic, I suppose.
OTOH, some of the sites are saying this is being kept quiet to avoid panic. However, I think if it was as bad as first reported, word of mouth would have spread the details pretty quickly.

Of course they would. They're hardly going to say 'ha ha! We were only joking!' because most of them are probably run by 17 year olds in their mums' basements. A friend of mine used to have a conspiracy joke site, that far too many people thought was serious.

Slovakia tightens border with flu-hit Ukraine

BRATISLAVA, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Slovakia said on Saturday it would close all but one road border crossing with Ukraine on Sunday because of Ukraine's flu epidemic.
Vysne Nemecke, the biggest checkpoint, will be the only one to stay open.
"The reason is the continuing worsening of the epidemic situation in Ukraine," Interior Minister Robert Kalinak told journalists. "This is intended to minimize any eventual outbreak of the disease."
Kalinak said the EU member state's decision was temporary and aimed to protect the bloc.
Doctors and hygienists will be stationed at the border to monitor passengers and have the powers to bar anyone suspected of being infected from entering the country.
Ukraine could delay a January presidential election until May next year because of its outbreak of H1N1 flu.
