Although there are many films talking about the Apocalypse and the end of the world, I have this strange feeling that this one is the exception...
Can't wait also :D!

2012

The world gets destroyed as a result of some implausible pseudo-scientific mumbo-jumbo. Everything blows up and goes underground and then gets covered by a 1.5 km-high tsunami waves. Several billion people die and hilarity ensues.

Yep, just like every other Emerich's movie, only with different mumbo-jumbo.

The mumbo jumbo doesn't even matter in his movies. Stuff being spectacularly destroyed is.

Wow, I thought that the opening night is in the same days in different countries... Though for example "New Moon" will begin in the next week here in Russia and in the next year in Germany as I heard...

UPDATE: oops, I was wrong. 26th of November...

2012

I'll simply copy my opinion from my blog, I can't be bothered to write the same again :D

"We've just came home from the cinema. Fuck fuck fuck, guys, after such movies one feels very hard that he/she doesn't want to die (( I don't want to die. I don't want my son and my parents to die. I want to live and I want them to live. I want to die old.
And this movie shows very nice the rich people's attitudes to us, poor guys. Nobody will save no one, rich people will get together and leave us, and we'll stay here to die.
And now about funny stuff. The president of Russia in the movie isn't similar to Putin or Medvedev )) No way )) It's the first. The second fact is: the hall applauded when Russian president said that he and Chineses decided to open the doors to save people outside )) It was funny and pleasant. It's the first time when Russians in American movie didn't turn out to stupid drunk guys with caps with ear flaps.
And we laughted a lot: what if some guys - 15-20 people - would jump up and scream in the middle of the movie: "We're all gonna die!!!" - and run away )) Haha, it would be funny ))
Well, this movie is nice, watch it."

Sorry for my bad English

I really liked it, splendid pictures and action scenes, the plot is well developed, though a bit exaggerated. And as Morgana said, it shows pretty well how rich and influential people would be preferentially treated over others if such a situtation should ever occur.

If such a situation should ever occur, everyone will die - rich or poor. There's no way to design and build such ark ships over a small period of time, it'll take the best and brightest engineers and workers and there's no way to conceal an operation of this magnitude in the Internet age. Sure, rich people might try and build shelters and such, but with 1.5 km-high tsunami waves and Earth crust shifting thousands of kilometers, that wouldn't help much. And even if someone will survive this in his shelter - what next? There's no electricity, fuel and production of any kind and sailing from one continent to another is impossible because the maps are useless.
"The Knowing" movie was much better in depicting the unavoidable natural disaster.

But again, seeking the logic and common sense in Roland Emerich's movies is like seeking for a deep philosophical meaning in the Tetris game. In both cases - there's no such thing.

Yeah, you're perfectly right, if such a situation ever happened (and there's probably a big emphasis on the if) it's pretty unlikely that anyone would survive at all or that a catastrophe like that could be kept hidden. Reading my post again, I realize that what I wrote is basicly nonsense (I was still tired when I posted this). However, what I was trying to say is that the movie showed quite well the consisting injustice between the privileged and the people living in developing countries, but just in general and not in reference to something like such a natural disaster.

- The Illusionist, I simply loved it. Amazing film.
- 2012 I hated it, for me it is a bad bad bad film. I don't like the actors, everything is so predictable in the movie, there are plenty of clichés. From the very beginning I knew Gordon was going to die, Sascha, Tamara, the protagonists would be together again and Adrien and Laura would fall in love.
American flags everywhere, I am so fed up with this, it seems it is not the end of the world but the end of the USA.
And of course since the Americans are the best of the best, it's they against the world, they keep dropping hints about the Russians, English, French...Oh, what was that!? Was it the Eiffel tower? ha ha ha ha!!!
In short: crappy film in my opinion. There's nothing new under the sun regarding this kind of films. Once you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Another DisneyEmerich movie  . Roland team is always astonishing in digital effects, but the main plot and the situations, characters, etc, etc are just horrible. The movie is horrible imo, It is better to buy the BD and cut just the action scenes, cause that's the only interesting. And yes, Knowing is the only good movie regarding natural disasters in years.

The Illusionist is a fantastic movie.

Anyway, let's see...I like some Roland movies, mainly Universal Soldier and Stargate, but cmon...this man is always making the same movies with nothing more to say, just incredible special effects. When he made Independence day I think he started to make the same things over and over again.

I knew exactly what I was going to see and I got exactly what I came for, so no damage done. His disaster movies always have exactly the same stock of characters thrown into exactly the same stock of situations. But the stuff blew up really good and that's what matters in his movies.

I still think you are being too general about what a situation is. What other movie of his gives the visualization of the Himalayans flooding?
