Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
On this day, 40 years ago, in what was likely a cold, rainy, miserable day in Birmingham England, The first Heavy Metal band (To play exclusive heavy metal, we're not counting bands like Blue Cheer and Led Zeppelin who just played stuff that SOUNDED like Metal), Black Sabbath, released their self titled, debut album. From that point on, the world of music would never be the same, and any musician who considers their style to be "Metal" owes Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, a debt of gratitude.
Here's where it all started

With three, wonderfully evil notes, making use of the forbidden tritone, and a solo worthy of great praise, Tony Iommi rang in the new Era.

I can't stand early Sabbath stuff (mostly due to Ozzy Osbourne's "singing), but I give tham a lot of credit for creating Heavy Metal and building the foundation for every other Metal band to come.

Almost forgot about this event. *puts on the s/t album*
Nothing will ever be as dark, sinister and heavy as the Black Sabbath -song.
"Oh no, no, please God help me!"

Could you explain that?we're not counting bands who just played stuff that SOUNDED like Metal
Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
Think of it this way, unless you're a deranged obsessed pro-lifer, you don't celebrate "Conception day", you celebrate "Birth date".icecab21 wrote:Could you explain that?we're not counting bands who just played stuff that SOUNDED like Metal
Sure, you spent 9 months incubating inside your mother and developing, but it wasn't until the doctor helped you out that you were "Born".
I would consider the earlier Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Blue Cheer albums akin to incubating in the metalmother's womb.
Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
if they wrote metal songs, they played metal songs, a metal song is by definition a metal song. a song is defined by how it sounds since a song is sound.
a song is born when it is recorded, therefore if another band recorded a song that "sounded like heavy metal" before black Sabbath, that band created heavy metal before black Sabbath and gave birth to metal before black Sabbath.
the first heavy metal band is a different thing than the first heavy metal song. a genre is defined by the song, not the band.
So if one band makes ten songs in 2010 , with one song sounding like X, and another band comes along in 2012 and makes a album with 10 songs sounding like X, you would say that X was born in 2012 and that band gave birth to the genre?

I'm saying that nothing that those bands released before 1970 was a full realization of metal.icecab21 wrote:if they wrote metal songs, they played metal songs, a metal song is by definition a metal song. a song is defined by how it sounds since a song is sound.

Your patience is humbling

Rebel’s patience humbling? The guy is saying that people made music that sounded like metal that was not metal.
Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
No. He is saying that just because a band releases a song that sounds like metal, that doesn't mean they are a metal band.icecab21 wrote:Rebel’s patience humbling? The guy is saying that people made music that sounded like metal that was not metal.
Weren't you arguing YESTERDAY that Sonata Arctica isn't a power metal band because they have a few songs with a string quartet, etc?
Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
I said not all the songs were power metal songs, since a person said that they had only listened to power metal songs from the band
A genre is a song, not a band
A song that sounds like metal, is metal
I would consider black Sabbath being the first band to play mainly metal songs just that, and not that they gave birth to metal since others played songs with the sound that people define as metal before black Sabbath played them. If he wants to say that Sabbath wrote the first true metal song, that would make them the ones that gave birth to the genre but I don't think exclusivity is a good claim for saying that a band was the first when nonexclusives did it first.

Good point.
Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
Let's look at it this way.
How many genres can you name that have no bands, and only songs?
when you hear a song that's "Different", and maybe doesn't fit the band's usual style, have they invented a new genre? I would say no. Not until there is a single band that plays it can you start the discussion of whether or not something is a genre

Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
I’m sure all sorts of song types have bands devoted to them exclusively; I would not say that a song only become a type of song if a group decided to exclusively do that type of song. How quick bands adopt exclusivity to a song type is something I think is a separate issue to a song type. A fusion of blues and baroque would still be fusion of blues and baroque whether one band did one song, ten bands each did one song, or 1 band did 10 songs.
Just like an invention, the inventor gets credit, not the first company that is able to make an industry or business out of the product. Often in music the band that makes something popular is not the band that started doing it

Re: Today, February 13th, 2010, marks the 40th birthday of Metal
I love black sabbath and I own every one of their albums, one singer I think always gets overlooked and barely mentioned is Tony martin, I believe the man is an excellent vocalist and did some great albums with sabbath.
I also especially like the new heaven and hell album which in my opinion should have just been called Black Sabbath.
As far as what they are saying about Led Zeppelin and Blue Cheer I don't think they are trying to insult the bands it's just that they were almost metal but hadn't quite hit the mark yet, once again this is not an insult.
when the real riffy rock started to come in only two bands started to play real heavy and that was Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, depending on who you ask many will claim that Deep purple helped to create Neo Classical metal and power metal and Black Sabbath helped to create many of the Thrash and alternative metal bands(though I do consider many of the dio era and tony martin era albums to be in more of the power metal vein)
This is all however just opinion, the good thing about opinions is that we don't have to agree with them.

when the last bomb explodes , rock and roll and cockroaches are going to be still around.
pd- Straiway to heaven has to be the ultimate rock and roll anthem, and some metal heads might think is a metal -masterpiece (being one of those myself) but as far as a proper metal band as we know it today, sabbath undoubtfully has set the record straigh from their first album up until today.
so. ......happy 41th and valentines day (is not the most metal day if you ask me:D)
