this will be a poll, and I would really like to hear Jens' opinion because he's played with both! Ok, and because this is strato forum, we'll add tolkki and matias to the list too.

I know there are plenty of other guitarists out there, many of whom may be superior to the list I composed. I really would like to hear Jens comment since he's played with all these guys. (or if he has another player in mind too)

Re: Shawn Lane Vs Yngwie Malmsteen
In my opinion Yngwie is the best because without him, the others wouldn't exist.

Re: Shawn Lane Vs Yngwie Malmsteen
If you want to compare Tolkki and Malmsteen, okay, makes sense. I think Malmsteen was a big inspiration for Tolkki. Throw Matias Kupiainen into the mix, also okay.
But Shawn Lane? Really? It's like comparing apples and pears.

Re: Shawn Lane Vs Yngwie Malmsteen
Nah, by that logic, comparing Jens to Jens is like comparing apples to pears is very versatile. If I were interested solely in a metal shred guitar comparison, I would have probably limited the list to Schrapnel's finest, or even just spammed a bunch of Euro Power Metal bands' guitar players. But that's not the aim of this thread. I'm really interested in malmsteen vs lane people's opinion, and I also want to hear Jens' experience playing with all these people. Besides, these threads are always fun!Ragehead91 wrote:If you want to compare Tolkki and Malmsteen, okay, makes sense. I think Malmsteen was a big inspiration for Tolkki. Re: Shawn Lane Vs Yngwie Malmsteen
Shawn lane: Tasty red apples
Tolkki: Big BIG watermelons
Malmsteen: Piña colada
Kupiainen: Tangerines
How the fuck can you put one above the other?

I am expecting Jens to give us something very diplomatic.
(I think they all are equally good or something like that)

Re: Shawn Lane Vs Yngwie Malmsteen
Comparing Yngwie and Shawn Lane is like... bizzare. Especially those 2 specific performances.
Shawn Lane gives a polished, controlled and complex show that brings out the subtleties of his technique and playing, quite in line with the place he was playing and probably the audience's expectations. Yngwie puts on a show as it is a big crowd looking for some action, while the tune itself is far more rocking and straightforward. And they're not even comprable pieces of music in the first place.
Apples and watermelons and tangerines indeed. I don't know about the pina coladas.

This is perfect! This was what I was interested in hearing, this kind of critique. All play guitar in some contemporary format so comparison is valid. All are proficient with their respective instrument as well, so it makes for interesting dialogue.NeonVomit wrote:Comparing Yngwie and Shawn Lane is like... bizzare. Re: Shawn Lane Vs Yngwie Malmsteen
I agree with some parts of your statement: In order to compare guitar stylesand skills you should first think about what similarities the subjects you want to compare do have. Yngwie and Shawn are from 2 different waves, and it's "unreal" to think they have something in commonwarrencurrymetal wrote:This is perfect!
