The best guitarist of Power Metal

Post by Rebel » Sat Jul 03, 2010 7:08 pm

Time for the showdown, I'll post the list of the guitarists from the biggest bands of Power Metal, you vote for the best.
If two lead guitar players are from the same band (Like with Angra), I will list both in one option, if a band has one lead and one rhythm player, I will list the lead player.

I'm going to leave off Matias and the new Sonata guitarist as they've only had one album to show their abilities (Or lack thereof, in the case of Elias).

My vote goes for the crazy Brazillians from Angra. One of the few power metal bands to ever really excite me with their guitar playing alone,

Hard close between Tolkki, Hansen and Liimitainen as they are all amazing guitarrists. But my vote now goes to Kai due to the history he has and the fact he was like the founder of the 80's Power Metal style :)

Kai would probably be in my second tier of guitarists, but he really don't have a very unique style, IMO. The guitarwork in the last 3 Angra albums has been nothing short of absolutely brilliant,

Victor Smolski from Rage. Why isn't he mentioned here?

From those on the list I'd probably chose Kai Hansen since while being a horrible singer he still is a great composer and guitar player, but honestly, why isn't Smolski on that list? Ever listened to the Rage albums post 1999? Or his Mind Odyssey or solo stuff?

m übrigen...
Eb-Dur -> D-Dur wäre ja eventuell Harmonisch-Moll... ^^ D-Dur ist IV-Stufe und III-Stufe ist Eb-Dur...
Nach Db-Dur würde ich auf es als Leitton bezeichnen. Meine soweit sich's schlüssig anhört. Akkord-Kadenzen muss man Erfahrungen sammeln... Manche Wendungen passen, andere nicht.

I just copy and pasted from a comment on youtube from that rage guy. He plays like a gigantic wanker by the way. BORRING. Want to see a good guitar player? Check out George Michael from WHAM! I'd vote for Cannibal Crops and Prince in this poll. Hell, even NeonVomits band is better than that.

Kiko and Raphael. Many power metal bands can provide outstanding solos, but Angra's rhythm guitars are unmatched. It's an amazing mix of precision and feeling.

This is what I'm talking about:

If we are talking about seriousness here, then I have also the right to state why isn't Yngwie Malmsteen in this list :?

Because Yngwie Malmsteen doesn't play this metal genre.

Yngwie Malmsteen isn't on for multiple reasons
1. He is a neo-classical composer, not power metal, while the two are related, if I put Malmsteen up, I'd have to put Vinnie Moore and a slew of other guitarists up there that would make the list WAY longer.
2. He's pretty boring
3. He's one of the worst human beings in music.

Basically, I populated this list with the guitarists of the most notable power metal bands, Rage is more regarded as a Speed Metal band, again, like with Malmsteen, if I start doing the similar genres or guitarists that have dabbled in power metal but it's not their main thing, the list gets huge.

the list is about power metal guitarists.

are you thinking more along the lines of "which band has your favorite guitar playing on their studio records"? for that ill say tolkki but i think its a very different thing than who the best guitar player is. if it was about which guitarist i would most like to work with, i would really like to see how each of them would work with the same backing track and both in free form and with some guidelines

Since each guitar player has their own style, both for rhythm, lead, and solo parts, which style do you prefer in power metal.

I think Jani is, but he's noooot such a good composer I think.

But the topic is about guitar players.

Talent at composing notwithstanding, I think it's pretty obvious that he wanted to keep doing Melodic Power Metal, and Tony wanted to do Symphonic Prog metal, and that's what caused the split.

Another comment on DoG I noticed is that Tony says he went over the top with Layering on Unia, but on Unia the layering was still very intelligent, and it served to emphasize the stronger points, it made a badass guitar riff more commanding. there was less layering on DoG, but sometimes it felt like I was listening to two songs at once thanks to Tony layering two different vocal tracks on top of each other.

Layered vocals! I watched that interview with mike who interviewed Tony and Henkka. Tony says they layered Finish vocals with English vocals, fun idea I say!! Days of Grays, I don't know what to say about that album. Probably just expected a lot more great power metal like I knew them for.

I'm still voting for Jenswie Johannsonstein. ...... . J Johannsonstein ... yep

(from his guitar video)

(sucks)

(I don't give a shit about a shit)
