White supremacists urge Thor boycott over casting of black actor as Norse god
Council of Conservative Citizens attacks Marvel for giving role of deity Heimdall to Idris Elba, star of The Wire.
A US white supremacist group has called for a boycott of the Kenneth Branagh-directed superhero movie Thor on the grounds that a black actor has been cast in the role of a Norse god.
The Council of Conservative Citizens is upset that London-born Idris Elba, star of The Wire and BBC detective series Luther as well as a number of Hollywood films, is to play deity Heimdall in the Marvel Studios feature. The group, which opposes inter-racial marriage and gay rights, has set up a website, boycott-thor.com to set out its opposition to what it sees as an example of leftwing social engineering.
"It [is] well known that Marvel is a company that advocates for leftwing ideologies and causes," the site reads. "Marvel frontman Stan 'Lee' Lieber boasts of being a major financier of leftwing political candidates. Marvel has viciously attacked the Tea Party movement, conservatives and European heritage.
"Now they have taken it one further, casting a black man as a Norse deity in their new movie Thor. Marvel has now inserted social engineering into European mythology."
The site chooses to ignore its target's thespian talents, referring to "hip-hop DJ Elba" in apparent reference to the actor's career in East End nightclubs more than a decade ago. Elba himself addressed the casting issue earlier this year, pointing out that "Thor has a hammer that flies to him when he clicks his fingers". He continued: "That's OK, but the colour of my skin is wrong?"
Branagh's decision to cast non-white actors as citizens of Asgard stands in apparent opposition to a one-time policy on Peter Jackson's forthcoming Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit. A British woman of Pakistani origin complained last month that she had been turned away from a casting session for being "too brown". The offending crew member, an independent contractor, was later sacked.
Thor, starring the Anglo-Saxon-looking Chris Hemsworth in the title role, and Jewish actor Natalie Portman as his love interest is due to arrive in cinemas next May.
I agree that the choice of a black man to play a norse god is weird, but well, can be interesting, let's see... it's so stupid to want to boycott a movie.

Probably the same people that bitched the little green men from Mars in "Mars Attacks" weren't green enough.
Still one has to wonder what would happen if Oliver Stone had cast Jamie Foxx as Jim Morrison, or for that matter if Branagh had cast Eddie Murphy as Heydrich (as opposed to himself) in HBO's "Conspiracy".
In a way it's understandable that they don't like the fact, that a Nordic god is being played by a non-white guy, I mean how would it look if Buddha was played by a white guy, c'mon? But it shouldn't be that big of a deal. If they don't like this fact then they shall not buy the tickets for the movie.

This movie should be boycotted. This PC crap is going too far. Enough of this stupid forced integration BS. A black guy portraying Heimdall makes as much sense as a blonde, nordic actor playing Martin Luther King. Hollywood is going to twist every single great European story left in order to cater to as much a wide demographic audience as possible. I don't think this movie is going to have much of an impact anyway but who knows what's next. A black Batman? For fuck's sake.
The producers of The Hobbit had to fire a casting director when a British woman of Pakistani origin sued because they was advertising for "light skin tone extras" to play Hobbits and felt this constituted racial discrimination against her. Amazing. Maybe white actors should sue too if they are not cast for the role of Shaka Zulu.
Racism is OK as long as it is against whites, it seems.

It's ok, at least white people live longer and don't tend to be annihilated by pointless wars and outdated religious practices as much, so whitey wins in the long run.
As for casting someone like that for Thor, it's like casting Rick Moranis in the role of Shaft which is pretty stupid and sort of doesn't fit at all with the original story, but it's hardly the first time that Hollywood's ruined the original story of something. The worst that can happen is that comic fans think it's crap, and that the movie just sucks (which happens all to often) and bombs at the box office and I have cheap birthday presents to give to cousins later on in the year.

I read something once that said that Catholic missionaries were on the verge of converting the Emperor of China (which dynasty, I can't recall) to Catholicism. One of his conditions was that Christ was to be portrayed to his people as Chinese looking. The missionaries refused, and so he didn't convert.
If this is true (i.e. if someone can be bothered to research it, because I certainly can't) that would show that the missionaries passed up the opportunity to convert a vast empire to Christianity simply due to semantics. A colossal strategic blunder if there ever was one.
