The FOOTBALL thread
For all the football fans:
Everything goes here. Champions League, Europa League, Copa Libertadores, Argentinian/Brazilian championships, Premier League, La Liga, Seria A, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Euro 2012 qualifiers, international matches, comments, post-match analysis, transfer gossip, tabloid-generated trouble players foolishly get themselves into, videos of nasty fouls... you name it, put it in here!
I'll start with an overview of a few Premier League teams and transfers:
Looks like Fabregas is going to Barca after all. With Nasri also apparently on his way to Manchester City and Van Persie injured (WHAT A SURPRISE THERE) it looks like Arsenal will have almost no backbone this season and Wenger seems to be totally ignoring the lessons of the last couple of years. I suppose Arshavin can, if he wants to, carry an entire team but he doesn't seem too happy at Arsenal - probably due to the lack of ambition that seems to have flooded the club... Wenger seems more focused on building a team of youngsters (who can play very prettily, but are easily overpowered, and then the most talented get snapped up by other teams) than actually winning anything. I don't understand why they're not falling over themselves to grab Joey Barton on a free transfer - he's exactly the kind of borderline-psychotic bulldozer they need to beef up the team (and as a bonus, his twitter feed is hilarious, the rantings of a true madman). Thomas Hitzlsperger is also available as one of the West Ham refugees - why aren't they getting him??
If they finish anything lower than runners-up in the Premier League, and don't win either the FA or Carling cups, I can actually imagine Wenger being respectfully asked to leave at the end of the season. He's done some amazing things for the team (who can forget the team who went through the entire season unbeaten to win the Double), but he's the first-team coach, not the youth & development coach. Carlo Ancelotti would make an amazing replacement (who was incredibly harshly done-by last term... but I guess that's what you get if your team is owned by a Russian oligarch)
Liverpool are looking to finally get it back together. It's kind of hard to believe that only in 2005 they won the Champions League (THE best final ever), and in 2007 they were finalists... and midway through last season, they were at risk of relegation. Offloading Torres was the best thing they could do since he'd become useless (and has been useless at Chelsea since) and nabbing Suarez and Carroll who add a massive attacking threat... it's going to be great this season, especially when Gerrard is finally fit again. Liverpool are the team I've supported since I was a child, so let's hope they really do it this season!
Sneijder seems to be heading to Manchester United, where he'll fit right in with Carlos Tevez apparently headed in the opposite direction - he's a world-class player and will give Internazionale an awesome boost, seeing as Eto'o is also unhappy there.
...and APOEL Nicosia (my local team from Cyprus) is preparing for a Champions League playoff with Krakow. If we lose, we still play in Europa, so I'm quite proud of what we little guys are capable of.
Can't wait for all this to really get started!

Leeds are a cautionary tale of what can happen to a club if they're not careful - a regularly high-placing Premier League team collapsing into the lower leagues. Liverpool almost succumbed a similar fate before they were essentially rescued by Fenway Sports Group (sound familiar, baseball fans?) and Portsmouth went from being FA Cup winners to relegation and administration in the space of almost exactly one season.
Given the insane spending on player's wages that's rampant in the Prem (something like 15 of the 20 teams operate in the red) one can only speculate on the next big victim of stupid business practices.

I haven't had a favorite team since the local Tier One club, Tampere United, wet bankrupt.
But being a Finn, I'm interested in how HJK Helsinki is doing in the international games. They're playing against Schalke 04 in the Europa League qualifiers next week. I think there's a chance to win the home game if the stars align or something.
However, the realistic result to expect of the away game is something like Schalke 4,5 - HJK 0,1 I'm afraid.

What?! When did that happen??Jabi wrote:I haven't had a favorite team since the local Tier One club, Tampere United, wet bankrupt.

I've been keeping an eye on HJK - Liverpool has a tradition with fine Finnish players (Jani Litmanen and Sami Hyppia are two of the finest to ever wear a Liverpool shirt) so I'm always wondering where our next Finnish star will come fromBut being a Finn, I'm interested in how HJK Helsinki is doing in the international games. I mean, if AEK Larnaca managed to make it this far (they were only promoted last season from the Cyprus 2nd division and they've got a playoff with Rosenborg for an EL place) anything is possible.

Yeah... the 'Special One' still doesn't seem to have found a way of stopping Barca (ok, except for the Copa Del Rey which I admit Real played very well and Ronaldo scored a very nice goal) but if they DO end up snatching Carols Tevez they'll have some even more serious attacking threats - Tevez is the kind of player who can single-handedly change a whole team. Alexis Sanchez will be just as amazing though!adrian9 wrote:no big surprises this year, BARCA is gonna be freaking awesome, and im so gonna enjoy mourinhos frustration face.
I'm just wondering what Barca are going to do with all those midfield players. Fabregas seems happy to give up being Arsenal captain in order to be on the bench at Barcelona, which is kind of strange. Mascherano at least works well as a defender too. But I've heard some rumours that they're basically going to try to gradually make Fabregas into Xavi's long-term replacement, what do you think?

Re: The FOOTBALL thread
They won the championship in 2006 and 2007. After that they took a big risk and spent a lot of money to form a strong team for the 2007-8 season. It has been said they counted on reaching the group stage of Champions League for economic survival. However, things didn't go as planned. I still remember the infamous third qualifying round game against Rosenborg. TamU just flat out sucked. The game was 0:2 for the visitors in no time and TamU never recovered from that. In the end they got beaten 0:5 on aggregate. Maybe the pressure was too much in the end, since it was pretty much everything or nothing... Anyway, this Spring it was established the club had received money from a dubious company based in Singapore, known for involvement in fixed football games. They were banned from the 2011 season of Veikkausliiga, most players left the team, and the debts were too much to pay. A sad story of greed and wanting too much too soon.NeonVomit wrote:What?! I have no idea about the value of the shirt, sorry.

Re: The FOOTBALL thread
yeah that seems possible, Mascherano going to defend a lil`bit more and fabregas joinin the mid field along with iniesta, xavi and busquest. (what a mid field ! nobody can match that)NeonVomit wrote:Yeah... the 'Special One' still doesn't seem to have found a way of stopping Barca (ok, except for the Copa Del Rey which I admit Real played very well and Ronaldo scored a very nice goal) but if they DO end up snatching Carols Tevez they'll have some even more serious attacking threats - Tevez is the kind of player who can single-handedly change a whole team. copa del rey was an strange case last season for me it barca was thinking more in champions league while real madrid was on the pressure of winning something! and they got that only chance.
so my all star line up ?!
----------------------Valdez--------------------
--Mascherano----Puyol----Pique-------Alves
--Xavi---Fabregas------Busquest-----Iniesta
--------Messi-------------Villa----------------
busquest can play behind fabregas, I dont know how they are going to manage mascherano because alves moves the ball almost to a attack position mascherano doesnt have that projection.

Well, sooner or later I suppose Barça will stop a bit that amazing amount of incredible talent and perfection while playing. I mean, it has been a long time being the best team. I suppose Real Madrid will have to win something and it is the second year of Mou, I think will be a little different this time. This sunday, the first offical match in Spain: Real Madrid - Barcelona (Supercopa de España). Theorically, Real arrives with better preparation and has been playing better in the friendly matches, but...I'm not sure if that means something
We'll see.
About my fav team, Valencia...let's hope to reach the third position again in La Liga and I hope to see a good Champions League. I'm still remembering that two consecutive years reaching the CL finals 2000 and 2001 and how we lost...
About Cesc replacing Xavi...well it is not the same kind of player. I don't think they try to make Cesc as the replacement for Xavi. It is just that Barça's football is 95% about midfield game. Xavi plays like Guardiola played. Cesc likes more to attack and plays near of the strikers. It is not that kind of organizer. But yes, it will be a good choice to replace Xavi in some way.

Well, Villa's goal on Sunday was un-freaking-believable. 2-2, great match, now the return at the Camp Nou is going to be a super one!
In the Premier League, Aguero seems to be worth his price, Torres finally seems to have woken up, Barton is up to his old tricks and Manchester United win three points, and lose three defenders

Re: The FOOTBALL thread
Well, it probably does, after all... Real were different in the match compared to last season. Much more aggressive - that's the only way to beat Barca, come at them. And true, I guess they have to stop winning everything eventually; Guardiola said he's probably only going to stay another season before moving on and fair enough, he's won more in 3 seasons than most coaches could even dream ofRazielSR wrote:Well, sooner or later I suppose Barça will stop a bit that amazing amount of incredible talent and perfection while playing. True, now that you put it like that, you're right - Fabregas is more of an attacking midfielder while Xavi pulls the strings and orchestrates the midfield - a pure midfield player. The Xavi - Iniesta core is the foundation of Barca's success and essentially the launchpad for Messi and the other strikers, so they would do well to look to the future.About Cesc replacing Xavi...well it is not the same kind of player. What happened to TamU's stadium? Has another local team taken it over? I (vaguely) remember driving past it and it looked pretty big, too big to just leave there... that must be traumatic, losing your favourite team. Even worse is when your team picks up and moves to another town, like Wimbledon (also known as 'The Dons' from 'WimbleDon') did when they moved to Milton Keynes, possibly the most boring, sterile town in Britain.
They are now known as the MK Dons, which makes absolutely no sense because they are no longer from Wimbledon and therefore the name is meaningless. Still, I guess it sounds better than the MK Ynes's.

About the tomorrow's match... YES! I can't wait either! Now I think Barça will win. I mean, RM played better than Barça and Barça play 45-50% more or less and they got a really good result. I suppose tomorrow Barça will win again. "Poor" Mou if that happens -again- !

Hey, Neon, and Agüero is starting really well up there, isn't it? I saw the match against Swansea and it was amazing. I like a lot that player and here, Atletico de Madrid people became mad when he left. I see that Silva is playing good too. He is a really talented and magic player.

WTF MEN? keep in mind, Xavi , Pedro and pique played on the second half and puyol didnt play, RM put all his guns on THEIR field and Xavi alonso`s goal just got in by chance.RazielSR wrote:It was depressingI remember, that, it was pretty messed up... Anyway, after that, with our dear Benitez we won La liga two years 2001-2002 / 2003-2004 and UEFA 2003-2004. We won la Copa del Rey 2007-2008 too with Koeman, but the real mess came that year. The club had a lot of economical problems due to the stupid management by Juan Soler (a megamillionaire with no football knowledge), and now the team is still recovering from that. That's because Villa was sold to Barça and Silva to Manchester City for example. But well, they did a good job last season, let's hope this year too. Of course we are light years away now from Real or Barça, but a third place is not easy to get in this league. What I really want is to see the team doing a good job in CL and try to get another Copa del Rey.

there is no chance that they gonna win in Camp nou.

What I meant to say was that RM were playing better than they did last season. I think the gulf in quality between Barca and RM is still there, however. Barca are currently so far ahead of any other team in the world it's crazy... the academy has a lot to do with this. You have all the core players having been together since they were teenagers.
(RM have a very good academy system as well, but they for some reason sell their players on... one of the Barca academy staff said it's like building a Ferrari and then not driving it.)
But with a coach like Mourinho, you can never know what to expect. If he managed to do what he did with Internazionale 2 seasons ago, there's no reason he couldn't do it with the players he has now.

yeah RM is playing better, but their game is pre historic (because of the players, to name a few, PEPE, MARCELO,SERGIO RAMOS, CR7) they never gonna catch the PS3 era Barca football.

I don't know if you people know about the things that happened yesterday, but it just shows AGAIN that Mourinho should be banned from the football world. I woud need the whole forum to explain how this man has been creating bad environment in all Barça - Madrid matches. Seriously, this man and Pepe, that abnormal creation, should be erradicated from football.
I HATE the way RM plays and I adore the kind of football Barça does, but the difference yesterday was just mainly Messi, that mytical player, plus Iniesta (that another mytical player) and the fresh air Cesc brought to the match.
