@Patricia : yeah, I think these matches would be really great and interesting. But, imho, the finals will be Portugal against Germany, unfortunately. Portugal has more better player than the french team and has a common playing, whereas France hasn't. :(

@nepi : I'm still hopeful too. :wink:

@NeonVomit : Hm, maybe next year.^^

That's why you don't have to trust the FIFA's list of best countries:

Czech Rep was 2nd, and USA was 5th!!

I thought those were the countries that were gonna make it to finals

Anyways in 2002 the 1st one was France (cuak) and the 2nd was Argentina (cuak)

What the hell was FIFA thinking? I understand about Czech Rep, I had very high hopes for them but USA 5th?! Since when did they achieve ANYTHING in football? They had a decent showing in 1998, but 2002 they only scored ONE goal and lost all their matches.... kind of like this time around! What the hell?

That's pretty much what I've been saying for almost a week. :) Of course, you never know, but at least in theory, I think that today's winner will probably win the World Cup.

Well, there was a lot of overconfidence surrounding the German team and German fans. I honestly haven't seen any team in the Cup so far that played really good football, and if you think so, then you haven't watched international games from 20 years ago. The truth has finally been revealed: Germany doesn't have anything. All of their individual players suck (Podolski, Klose and Ballack are stars?!? I think not; they are three among MANY like them). And before you say that I'm being biased, Argentina's team play sucked too. The problem with Germany is that this sudden feeling of overconfidence after getting some good results at home made almost every German think that they were going to win for sure. Klinsmann was praised as a great leader, for some reason unknown to me.

I tell you one thing, my friend: Everybody in Germany knows that the indivdual players aren't as strong as the ones from other nations. But Lehmann was very strong as a goalkeeper, and don't mess with Klose - expect yesterday he was the best striker of the Championship so far. Anyways, you might have recognized that it was not the abilitys of the individual players, but the fact that they were (almost) the only team in this championship that REALLY played as a team. That was/is their strength.

If you say you don't know the reasons why Klinsmann was praised as a great leader, you didn't follow the development in football Germany over the last 10, 20 years (and I don't blame you, by the way :wink: ): German soccer was always slow, a little bit boring, not very fast and offensive. Klinsmann changed that, which was like a Revolution for German Football (even the international press has recognized this fact). And he formed a team with a great spirit and coherence. Weeks before the Championship, the German Boulevard press and lots of trainers and self-called experts bashed against Klinsmann. Now they praise him... I personally like him VERY MUCH, he is an honest (and I REALLY mean honest!!), natural, determined guy, and it would be the best for German Football if he'd stay, but in his case I really would doubt if it is the best decision. He definitely has not forget how the publicity treated him before the Championship.

Stealth, mi amigo, what's wrong about the germans being happy because of overconfidence ? We usually don't have many reasons to be happy, or at least we can't find any. Being proud of our country, showing our flag and singing our hymn is pretty difficult, and you exactly know why.

Let's start from basic: As a (half) german I can tell you, that we're not really happy people, let's say we can complain about pretty everything, though I guess almost every German would try to convince you of the opposite.. However, now it was finally cool to hang out german flags and be proud of our country.
After that terrible EM 2004 nobody believed that we would come this far, in fact most of the people even thought that we would already get wiped out in preliminary round. As stratohawk said, everybody was bashing Klinsmann for his decisions before WC, like taking Kahn out. I don't follow soccer that much, i can't really say whether Lehmann was a good "replacement" for Kahn.

That WC gave us much, I just hope that we don't give up everything now. Yet before WC started, there were campaigns like "Du bist Deutschland" which tried to give us back the feeling of a united nation, which tried to make us proud of ourselves again. Let's continue this way.

No! That's what I meant before, I don't think that Germany played well as a team. Germany has traditionally had strong physical teams, and this was one of their weakest teams in recent history. As I was talking on the phone with my dad, we agreed on that: they are not the strong complicated team they used to be. Sorry, I'm sure we have different opinions on what makes a good team; I think that Germany, both individually and collectively, was not a good team. But as I said before, I think that no team nowadays is really good, strong and agile.

@ Dave: What you say about feeling united, waving flags, etc. is more than ok with me. But in your overconfidence, some of you here started bullying on the other teams. So, feeling united and happy again is excellent. Just make sure than in your quest for unity, you don't restore the old feeling of superiority of many decades ago. Bullying other countries mixed with German slogans (Deutschland Deutschland !!!! Mit dem Herzen in der Hand, und der Leidenschaft im Bein, werden wir Weltmeister sein) is a sign of that. Well, the slogan alone isn't, but mixed with other comments, it can be.

And I don't see a reason or point for being proud of one's country.

Wow... we might disagree about sports, which is absolutely okay to me. But this quote here contains some of the biggest bullshit I read for a long time!!
I mean, did I miss something? Where did some German supporter bash against other nations? And what's with the supporters of other teams? I guess it's okay with everybody to wish your own country to win, and to write some small provocations - as long as everybody understands that it's not 100% serious.
You seem to have absolutely no clue about how we Germans deal with our difficult history, of how obedient we try to be in terms of Patriotism and stuff. Restoring feelings of superiority... I'm disappointed to read that. My friend, compare the German Anthem to all the other anthems of other nations. Whilst in many other ones the Nations are praised, often combined with prayers for strength and power, not seldom mixed with phrases of revenge, in the German anthem we only sing about Unity, Right and Freedom. This is only an example...
I'm very very disappointed to read such an injudicious trash. Ask the countless fans that visited our country. Ask them! None of them had problems to see that the Germans dare to hang out their National Flag again (a flag which has nothing to do with the Third Reich but with the democratic movement of 1848), to sing the anthem or some Football Songs. I have no idea where you got that impression from that some people try to "restore the old feeling of superiority" again. Of course also in Germany, Neofascistic groups do exist. But they absolutely had nothing to do with this world championship. Politicians were afraid that they could use the Cup as a kind of platform, to show the world their ideas. But this small group of fucking Nazis perished in the nation-wide enthusiasm for this team, for football, for our country.

Sorry, pal, you haven't realized how sensitive everyone in Germany is handling the difficult past of the 20th Century, and that the rest of the world is not afraid of a German country or German people getting on that bullshit of radical Nationalism again.

I don't want to be impolite, please don't misunderstand me. Maybe you exaggerated your formulation on purpose. But what you wrote hurt me.

Btw, Dave, I liked your post. In almost everyway what/how I think/feel. Nice observation, and also sense of humour. By the way, I'm also only half German. But it hits me in my heart if someone writes about us, that we should pay attention not to get in that attitude of "the past" again. Those people have no clue...

^^agreed

Maybe he talked about Warrior's post "final against brazil... 4-1 because they suck!" ? Although that hasn't got anything to do with "old feeling of superiority of many decades ago"..

100% agree about the hymn part, too. Of course, in those days and with a past like that the first verse of the Deutschlandlied doesn't sound that good anymore, but you have to mind the circumstances and the time in which that song was written.. Long before the 3rd Reich.
Other national hymns are about moving to the battle with axes and armies, ours is about unity, justice and freedom, drinking and dancing.

The little german phrase I wrote I took from a song from a little band, which has absolutely no "old feeling of superiority of many decades ago".. First: Do you know what it means in English ? Second: How can that offense other countries ?

Agreed--the goalkeeping was very strong on Germany's side of the field yesterday. But the actual gameplaying just wasn't so good. Germany seemed to be having a serious problem with accuracy, which kept them from scoring AND ensured that they lost control of the ball to Italy's superior handling as often as possible.

However, I have to admit that I didn't think Italy would win, simply because Germany's team played such a fucking hard game that I figured they would either tire out the Italian team until they lost their heart, or just straight out injure everyone on the team until Italy could no longer play. I was really, really impressed with Germany's relentlessness and fortitude.
