Sorry guys who doesn't like Russia, or Putin, or something... But shut up please, you don't know what was life in Russia looked like when all the power was in Eltsin's hands. Yes, Putin made some mistakes as in situation with "Kursk" when two hundred people were under tons of cold north water without any hope and any chanse... But believe me - it's not easy to be a president of such big country as Russian Federation, especially in that times of 90's. I remember as I was a child and there was nothing in the shops and my cat ate not a special food for fat cats but mise that he could catch himself. Then Putin took the power. And now I have a good education, an own flat, a good job, and my parents don't care about what we'll eat tomorrow. All this thanks to Putin. He made an order in the country where the mess was.

Thank you! :)

From what I gather, all Yeltsin thought about while he was in office was Wine, Women&Song. In that order.
Seriously, Russia is in good shape now? Thats good to hear.
What about the new President? Wonder how he will be?

Hahah, after my yesterday post I told my husband about this topic. And he said: "Tell them that very soon Putin will take the power all ower the world and all countries' sitizens will clear away for bears on Tverskaya street" Don't take offence guys, it's just a joke

Yes, I think that Russian Federation is in a very good shape. More that this, Putin will make influence on the politics in Russia and in the world even when his "president time" will end.

And is it a positive thing?? Why do we have in our constitutions these restrictions on the highest officials' term of office?
It's a safeguard to avoid the high official to stay at the power for too long. But you know...if anybody wants to go around it, he/she will.

I agree with black death. The whole point of the democratic system is to regulate how much power a single individual can have by decentralizing duties. An almighty, centralized power which overrules all other decisions is not usually a good thing (in fact, it never is). Centralized governments erode the role of democracy, which is based on people's participation in political decisions (at least to some extent). A single individual with too much unregulated power can be very harmful. Here are a few examples:

Italy: Mussolini
Germany: Hitler
Portugal: Salazar
Argentina: Onganía, Videla, Galtieri
Chile: Pinochet
Yugoslavia: Tito
Romania: Ceausescu
Spain: Franco
Paraguay: Stroessner
U.S.: Bush
North Korea: Kim Jong-il
Irak: Saddam
France: Louis XIV
Russia: Stalin

If a person has too much power and knows that nobody can take it from him, he can do what he wants...without any limitation. That's always bad and that's why there are these statutory restrictions, even in Russian costitution.

Have you seen Stealth's list? Putin is very close to it...

Well, I should say what I wanted to say more precisely. No, you're right, Putin and Stalin have nothing in common right now, but if Putin will not give up his attempts to stay at the power (as a president or prime minister or whatever else), they may start to have something in common.

Dude, Putin will never be the same as Stalin. Firstly, he hasn't got the right hair.

Btw, if you put the stress on the second syllable of Putin (to pronounce it "Putín"), it sounds better. It means "little male-bitch" in Spanish (Puto = a male-bitch; Putín = the same, but a little one). :D

In my opinion, Stalin lived in such hard time that very often circumstances were the causes of his actions. Anyways, we didn't live then and cannot know everything, we can just guess... And about Putin - his time is more quiet. We Russians have seen just good things from him, so I'd like to see him every day on TV in his president role or premier role or something. I think - every person is individual, and every history time is individual, and we shouldn't generalize...

From an outsider's point of view, Putin is what Russia needed at this time. After the Yeltsin years, a strong decisive leader is what the country required to get it back on its feet.

But don't forget that Stalin made USSR a strong country as so as Putin did  Well, maybe I was wrong - they HAVE something common. But it's not the way of reaching the goals, of course...

That's exactly what some countries (such as Estonia, Georgia, Ukraine, to some extent Finland too) are worried about.

Personally I don't think that Russia is a threat to Finland. But I can understand why countries in the former East block feel awkward.

Firstly, it was NOT me, who started comparing.
Secondly, you absolutely didn't catch what I was speaking about! The only thing I said is that the presidential term of office is in many countries limited for some time period and that it's not without reason.
Carcass wrote:Personally I don't think that Russia is a threat to Finland. But I can understand why countries in the former East block feel awkward.
Yeah, probably some people feel awkward about it. But the only problem I have with Putin's doing-everything-possible-just-to-stay-at-the-power is that it has nothing to do with democracy. It's absolutely the same undemocratical regardless if it's in Russia or Trinidad or wherever else. If our (ex)president started behaving like Putin, I would critisize him in the same way.

Considering the past 7 years&what the USA has endured, thank God the terms are limited. Of course, realisticly the leader of a country cannot be blamed for everything&everybody's problems. But, limiting one individual from a long series of terms prevents an overdose of power&its dangers.
