Masterplan was founded by Roland Grapow and Uli Kusch after they were fierd from Helloween. They were joined by norweigian singer Jorn Lande. In 2002 they recorded their debut Album with the help of Children of Bodom Keyboardist Janne Wirrman and bassist Jürgen Attig. Both left the Band after recording the first Album. For touring and subsequent recordings the former Iron Savior bassist Jan S. Eckert and keyboardist Alex Mackenrott were hierd. The selftiteld debut Album was released in january of 2003. It was a sucess and recieved mostly good reviews. The Band was awarded with the "European Boarder Breakers" award in 2004. The Next Album Aeronautics was recorded in late 2004 and released in early 2005. They went on tour with Circle II Circle and Rob Rock. During the writing of the third Album in 2006 the Band parted way with singer Jorn Lande, citing "musical differences" as the reason for the split. The split was amicable enough that Jørn agreed to perform four previously arranged live appearances before departing although two of these were eventually canceled by the promoters. A few months later Uli Kusch announced his depature from the band due to personal problems with Roland Grapow. A few days later the Band announced the replacements for Jorn and Kusch: Mike Dimeo, former singer of Riot, and Mike Terrana, who is drumming for half Europe. The third Album entiteld MK II was released and while successful, some fans claimed it never captured the original Masterplan magic that Jørn Lande brought. Some fans were puzzled by the "Americanization" of the sound of the band and to this day long for the return of Jørn Lande. The went on tour as support Band for the NWOBHM Legends Saxon. After that the Band took a break and Roland Grapow went on producing other Bands in his Studio. In November of 2008 they announced that the break is over and they they've started to work on the next Album. On January 11th 2009 Mike DiMeo confirmed on his MySpace page that he had parted ways with Masterplan. In a statement on the Band website Roland stated that they've already found a new singer and that they will reveal his name soon. On January 21st 200 the dutch rock & metal magazine Aardschok confirmed the umours about Jorn Lande's return to his former band Masterplan.
